How to Date a Vintage Bicycle by Its Components

The most reliable way to date a classic bicycle is to read the date codes its makers stamped into the parts. A maker-by-maker reference — Campagnolo, Shimano, Maillard, Simplex, Stronglight and Sturmey-Archer — and how to combine them.

A frame rarely tells you its own birthday. The number stamped into it may be ambiguous, reused or simply undocumented, and paint outlives its decade. The parts bolted to that frame are a different matter. Through the classic decades the great component makers stamped their work with date codes that were meant to be read, and reading them is the single most reliable way to place a bicycle in time. It is also the one method that works across every marque, so it is worth learning once and using forever.

This reference gathers the codes you are most likely to meet on a classic lightweight, maker by maker, and then shows how to combine them. It is honest about the gaps: some makers never used a consistent code at all, and a part can only ever tell you about itself. Used with care, though, the components will usually settle a build to within a year.

The one rule that makes it work

Everything here rests on a single principle: a frame can be no older than the newest original part fitted to it. A 1972 frame may wear a 1971 derailleur, because the shop built it from the parts on the shelf, but it will not wear a 1974 one unless someone changed it later. So you gather two or three dated parts, look for the point they agree on and read the frame as having been assembled in that year or the one just after. The single caution is originality: a replaced hub or a swapped chainset dates the repair, not the bicycle, so weigh how original a machine is before you trust any one code.

Campagnolo

Campagnolo is the most rewarding maker to date, because its system is consistent and its parts are everywhere on better bicycles. The key is the back of the crank arm, and the key to that is the shape around the number. From 1973 to 1979 the year of manufacture is the last digit inside a diamond; from 1980 to 1984 the same digit sits inside a circle; and from 1985 the code moves to a rectangle, where “11” means 1985, “22” means 1986 and “33” means 1987. A second digit sometimes sits alongside the first and is generally read as the quarter of the year, though that reading is collectors’ inference rather than anything Campagnolo published. Crank arms made from 1958 to 1972 were not dated on the back at all, so an undated Record arm is itself a clue that the part is early.

Campagnolo hubs help too: the lock nut on the axle is usually stamped “CAM.” followed by the last two digits of the year, so “CAM 65” reads as 1965. And the Nuovo Record rear derailleur carries a patent line that tracks its date — “PATENT” with no year before 1970, and “PAT. 70” or similar from 1970 onward.

Shimano

From 1976 Shimano used a clean two-letter date code, and it ran that system for decades. The first letter is the year and the second is the month. The years begin at A for 1976, B for 1977, C for 1978 and so on through the alphabet, resetting after Z (2001) to begin again. The months run A for January through L for December. So a code reading “VI” is September 1997. Look for the stamp on crank arms, rear derailleurs and hub bodies; front derailleurs do not always carry one.

The French makers

The French components that filled Peugeots, Gitanes, Mercier and countless others are a mixed bag, but two of them date beautifully. Maillard and its budget brand Normandy stamped their hubs with an open week-and-year mark: two digits for the week of the year, then two for the year, so “27 78” is the twenty-seventh week of 1978. The Normandy name gave way to Maillard around 1981, which is a dating clue in its own right. Simplex derailleurs, the Prestige in particular, carry a month-and-year code on the back face.

Stronglight is the awkward one: there was never a consistent Stronglight date stamp, so its cranks are dated by model instead. The 49D ran from about 1949 to 1984; the 93 arrived for 1968 and finished in 1978; the 105 followed in 1976 and lasted to 1983; the 106 did not appear until 1984. That last date is worth holding on to, because a 106 crank puts a bicycle in 1984 or later whatever the rest of it suggests. Mafac brakes are the same story, dated by model and pad style rather than by a code. When a French maker will not give you a number, its catalog lifetime becomes the tool.

Sturmey-Archer

If the bicycle is British and has an internally geared rear hub, dating it is often the easiest task of all. Sturmey-Archer stamped the hub shell with the month and the last two digits of the year of manufacture, in plain sight. On a roadster or a three-speed still wearing its original rear wheel, that stamp is frequently the fastest and firmest date on the whole machine — which is why it is the natural cross-check for a Raleigh.

Tubing and decals as a cross-check

The frame itself carries softer date evidence. Tubing transfers — Reynolds 531 in its several forms, later Reynolds 753, Columbus and the rest — changed design over the years, and both the type of tubing and the exact style of the decal help bracket an era. A decal scheme rarely gives a single year on its own, but laid over the hard component dates it usually decides which of two candidate years is correct. Treat it as the confirming layer, not the foundation.

The finish and the fittings add a final layer. Chromium plating came into wide use in the bicycle trade around 1930, so bright chrome rather than the older dull nickel points to the 1930s or later; a head badge or a transfer can be matched against a maker’s known designs; and even a lamp bracket or a braze-on may carry a datable change. None of these decides a year on its own, but each one narrows the field. Put it together

Say a bicycle carries a Campagnolo crank whose arm is stamped with a single digit inside a circle, a pair of Maillard hubs reading “32 81” and a Reynolds 531 frame. The circle places the crank in the 1980-to-1984 window; the hubs read the thirty-second week of 1981; nothing on the bike is newer than that. The frame was almost certainly built for the 1982 season. One part alone would leave you guessing — the agreement between them is what closes the case. That is the whole method: gather the codes, find where they meet and let the newest original part set the floor.
