Ebykr (ebykr.com) is a website about classic lightweight bicycles, run by Anschutz Media Inc. of California, USA (“Ebykr”, “we”, “us” or “our”). This policy explains what personal information the site collects, why we collect it, who else handles it, how long we keep it and the choices you have. It covers ebykr.com, its forum and The Ebykr Digest newsletter.

In short: Ebykr sells nothing and carries no advertising. We do not sell personal information and we do not share it for advertising. Most of what we hold is what any website holds, visit records and security logs, plus what you choose to give us when you create an account, comment, subscribe or contribute to the archive.

1. Information we collect

When you visit the site

Visit records. Our own statistics software runs on our server and records each page view: your IP address, browser and device type, the page that referred you, the pages you view, the time and an approximate location worked out from your IP address on our server. IP addresses are stored in full. Visits by signed-in members are not recorded.
Google Analytics. Google Analytics 4 measures how the site is used, through cookies, and records actions such as scrolling, link clicks, sign-ups and form submissions. Google states that Google Analytics 4 does not log or store IP addresses. Our Google Analytics property is not linked to any advertising product. Google explains how it uses information from sites that use its services at policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites.
Server and security logs. Our web server logs each request: IP address, page requested, browser and time. Our security systems record the IP addresses of blocked requests and failed sign-in attempts, and our security service provider receives information about blocked attacks so it can protect other sites too.

When you create an account or sign in

Your username, email address, a scrambled (hashed) form of your password and the display name you choose, plus any profile details you add.
If you use Sign in with Google, Google sends us your name, email address and Google account identifier. We never see your Google password.

When you comment or take part in the forum

Comments: the name, email address and optional website you enter, along with your IP address and browser type. Your name, and your website if you give one, appear publicly with the comment. Your email address is never published.
Avatars: comment pages show profile pictures from an outside avatar service. To show one, your browser requests the picture from that service using a coded (hashed) form of the commenter’s email address.
Forum: your topics, replies, poll votes, reactions and Bicycle Marketplace listings appear publicly with your display name. If you subscribe to a topic or forum, we email you when new posts appear.

When you subscribe to The Ebykr Digest

Your email address, your subscription status, the form you used and the dates you subscribed, confirmed and unsubscribed. No name and no IP address are stored with a subscription. Every subscription is confirmed by email before anything is sent.

When you write to us

The contact form sends your name, email address and message to our inbox by email. Messages are not stored on the website.

When you contribute to the archive

The site has three contribution forms: the Serial Registry, Submit Your Bike and the Docs Drop.

What we publish: the details you submit, such as maker, model, year, serial number, specifications, photographs and documents, with the credit you choose: your name, a handle or none.
What stays private: your name, email address, account, IP address and a record of your consent (its date and the wording you agreed to). Only Ebykr’s editors can see these.
IP addresses are recorded with a contribution to help us moderate and prevent abuse, and are deleted after 90 days.
Serial Registry entries are published under a Creative Commons license (see our Terms of Service).

Kept in your browser, not by us

Follow, Save, unsent drafts of the contribution forms (kept for 30 days) and your light or dark theme choice are stored in your own browser’s local storage. They are never sent to us, and clearing your browser’s data for ebykr.com removes them.

2. Cookies

Cookies are small files a website stores in your browser. Ebykr uses these:

You can block or delete cookies in your browser’s settings. The site works without them, except that you cannot stay signed in. Google offers a browser add-on that stops Google Analytics on every site: tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout.

3. How we use information

To run the site, your account, the comments and the forum.
To moderate, publish and credit the contributions you send.
To send The Ebykr Digest if you subscribe, forum notices you ask for and account emails such as password resets.
To reply when you write to us.
To understand which pages are read, so we know what to write and what to fix.
To protect the site against spam, abuse and attacks.
To meet legal obligations.

We do not use personal information for advertising, we do not sell it and we do not use it to train AI models. We make no automated decisions about you that have legal or similarly significant effects.

4. Legal bases (visitors in the European Economic Area, the UK and Switzerland)

Contract: to provide your account and the services you ask for.
Consent: for The Ebykr Digest and for publishing your contributions. You can withdraw consent at any time; doing so does not affect what was done before.
Legitimate interests: to run, secure and improve the site, measure readership, moderate contributions and keep records of the consent given with them.
Legal obligation: where the law requires us to keep or disclose information.

5. Who receives information

These service providers handle information for us, only to provide their service:

A hosting provider runs the server the website lives on (United States).
A cloud storage provider keeps our encrypted off-site backups (United States).
Google provides Google Analytics and Sign in with Google.
Email services send the site’s email, such as password resets and The Ebykr Digest, and deliver contact form messages to us.
An avatar service shows profile pictures on comment pages.
A security service provider helps protect the site against attacks.
An AI assistant service helps us maintain the site. During that work it may read site records such as logs and moderation queues.

Beyond these:

The public sees whatever you choose to publish: comments, forum posts and contributions with your chosen credit.
Legal requests: we disclose information when the law requires it, or to protect the rights, property or safety of Ebykr, its members or others.
A change of ownership: if Ebykr passes to a new owner, the information would pass with it and stay under this policy.

We do not sell personal information and we do not share it for cross-site advertising.

6. Where information is processed

Ebykr’s server and its service providers are in the United States. If you visit from outside the United States, your information is transferred there. Where the law requires it, these transfers rely on the safeguards our providers offer for international transfers.

7. How long we keep it

8. Your choices and rights

Unsubscribe from The Ebykr Digest with the link in any issue.
Update your profile in your account at any time.
Cookies: see section 2.

Depending on where you live (including the European Economic Area, the UK and California), you may have the right to ask for access to your personal information, a copy of it, its correction or its deletion; to object to or restrict how we use it; and to withdraw consent. You may also complain to your local data protection authority. We will not treat you differently for using these rights.

To make a request, email eabykr@gmail.com. We may need to confirm the request comes from you, for example by replying to the email address we hold, and we answer within 30 days. If you ask us to delete your details from a published contribution, we remove your name and contact details; we may keep the factual record without them, such as a serial number or a specification, as the license you granted allows.

9. Do Not Track

Browsers can send a “Do Not Track” signal, but there is no agreed standard for honoring it, so the site does not change what it does when it receives one. Apart from the services described in section 5, we do not allow third parties to collect information about you on Ebykr, and we host no advertising networks.

10. Security

The site is served only over encrypted connections, administrator accounts use two-factor sign-in, a firewall screens incoming requests and backups are encrypted. Access to personal information is limited to Ebykr’s editors. No system is perfectly secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security.

11. Children

Ebykr is not directed to children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child under 13 has given us personal information, contact us and we will delete it. Members aged 13 to 17 need a parent’s or guardian’s permission to use the site (see our Terms of Service).

12. Changes to this policy

When we change this policy we post the new version here with a new “Last updated” date. If a change materially affects how we use information we already hold, we will also note it on the site.
