The 1990 Reynolds Product Range, a 16-page brochure from TI Reynolds 531 Limited setting out every tube set then available to framebuilders, each with a full table of part numbers, outside diameters, gauges, lengths and tip counts. It is the largest single document in the Reynolds group here and the direct successor to the 1988 Product Range.
Dating. Unlike the 1988 brochure, whose colophon carries a print code, this one is signed only 82/164 Pentad. Printed in England. The year comes from the document itself: the printed company chronology runs to a final entry reading 1990 The launch of 653 ATB and Magnum range, and the brochure is the one announcing exactly those products, with 653 All Terrain and the whole 531, 501 and 500 Magnum range appearing here for the first time.
⚠ A dating conflict inside Reynolds’ own literature. This brochure states 1935 “531” brand introduced. The 1988 Product Range, printed two years earlier and otherwise carrying the same chronology in the same words, states 1930. Both are Reynolds’ own published history of its own brand, and they disagree by five years. Neither is a transcription error; both readings have been checked at magnification against the printed page. Anyone citing a date for the introduction of the 531 brand should know that the firm published two.
That joins the conflict already recorded against the 1988 brochure, which compresses the butting patent and the founding of the Patent Butted Tube Company into 1898, where the 1972 Top Tubes booklet separates them into a patent in 1897 and a company in 1898. This 1990 brochure repeats the 1898 version.
One misprint was fixed and one was not. The 1988 brochure prints Himault for Hinault; here it is corrected to Hinault. Le Mond for LeMond survives uncorrected in both.
The most useful single table is the technical specification on the back cover, which pairs each material with its typical ultimate tensile strength and its recommended brazing temperature. Reynolds 753 is to be brazed at 650°C where every other tube in the range is given 950°C or 1100°C. That figure is the reason 753 was restricted to approved constructors, and it is the fact most worth having in front of anyone contemplating work on a 753 frame. The table also settles a small discrepancy elsewhere in this collection: 753 is given here as 195,000 p.s.i., matching the French column of the undated 753 All Terrain set sheet rather than its English column, which prints 195,500.
The brochure reached the Ebykr collection through the National Cycle Archive in partnership with the Veteran-Cycle Club, whose courtesy card is the first page of the source file. That card is not reproduced here.

At the heart of a great bike
Our success story shows that for over 90 years Reynolds has been at the forefront of tube technology.
This brochure outlines the exciting new range of cycle tube sets available to framebuilders for racing, touring, all-terrain and specialist design applications.
Reynolds are proud of their record and now with the following new range of products can help both rider and builder ride towards the 21st Century.
Reynolds – The heart of a great bike.
GENERAL NOTE:
When purchasing standard sets from a stockist there may be manipulation variations on fork rake and tip finishes. Also stockists may not carry in stock sets designed for volume manufacturers.
A SUCCESS STORY 1898-1988
In 1898 Alfred Milward Reynolds patented the ‘butting’ process and founded the “Patent Butted Tube Company”. From these small beginnings in the suburbs of Birmingham has grown the internationally renowned TI Reynolds 531 Ltd, manufacturers of cycle frame tubes, supplying cycle manufacturers in 23 countries world wide.
Since the development of the butting process there have been many important events in the history of the company.
1935 “531” brand introduced.
1938 Reynolds awarded the Cycle Touring Club award for its 531 tube being “the most significant contribution to cycling”.
1958 A cycle frame built in Reynolds 531 rode to victory in the Tour de France.
In the 31 subsequent years frames built from Reynolds material have been first past the line 27 times. This is a unique record for this, the most testing cycle race in the world.
Many of the most famous names in cycle racing including Anquetil, Merckx, Hinault, Thevenet, Fignon, Le Mond and Doyle have chosen Reynolds frame tubes during their careers.
1976 Reynolds introduced 753. A new concept in cycle frame tubes. Fifty percent stronger than any competitive tubing.
1980 Reynolds were awarded the prestigious French “Guidon D’Or” for services to cycling sport.
1981 When Richard Noble designed his Thrust car to attempt the world land speed record he needed a very strong but light material for the chassis of the car.
Reynolds 531 was chosen and the record books show that Reynolds 531 is now the fastest tube on earth.
1982 A new type of material was added to the Reynolds range, “501”. Until now all the Reynolds materials had been produced from manganese molybdenum steels due to their ability to hold properties after applying heat.
501 was introduced as a tube set for volume producers in chrome molybdenum steel. It has proved its worth and has become established below 531 in the market.
1987 Another first for Reynolds. The launch of 653. This tube set was the first available to builders with variable strength tubes.
These strengths are specially designed for the professional racer and 653 is a new concept in obtaining strength and stiffness where it is needed most in the frame geometry.
1990 The launch of 653 ATB and Magnum range.
