Reynolds 753 Cycle Tubing is a special manganese-molybdenum steel cycle tube that has been developed by Reynolds engineers, using techniques gained over many years’ experience in the manufacture of high strength alloy tubing for cycle and aerospace applications. The exceptional physical properties of Reynolds 753 allow frame tubes to be produced in wall thicknesses down to approx. 0.3 mm, their high stiffness ensuring that top quality frames can be produced with extreme lightness and a high rigidity.
MINIMUM PHYSICAL PROPERTIES
Ultimate Tensile Stress | 1158 N/mm² | (75 tonf/in² )
0.2% Proof Stress | 927 N/mm² | (60 tonf/in² )
Elongation on 5.65 √A | 8%
NOTES FOR GUIDANCE WHEN BUILDING ULTRA LIGHTWEIGHT CYCLE FRAMES
USING REYNOLDS 753 TUBES
Effective frame building with such thin tubes calls for the work to be undertaken only by craftsmen builders well used to making very light frames.
During development work on the tubing, many tests have been made on assembly methods, and whilst other techniques might be found satisfactory, it is strongly recommended that the following guidelines should be used for frame soldering.
FILLER ROD MATERIAL should be to specification DIN 8513-L-AG40 Od or U.S. ASTM B260-56T, BAg-la [?], or AMS 4769A or Mil-S-15395 Class 7 or an equivalent rod with melting range not exceeding 650°C.
FLUXES as recommended by the rod supplier, but should be fluoride based and active at 550°C.
[The front of Reynolds Technical Data Sheet T205 for Reynolds 753 butted cycle frame tubes, forks and stays, with a “Guaranteed built with Reynolds 753” badge below the title. Below it are an introduction to the manganese-molybdenum steel tube, a boxed table of minimum physical properties and the first of the notes for guidance on building ultra lightweight frames, on filler rod and fluxes. The sheet is printed in purple ink, with the REYNOLDS name and the company name in bands across the top.]

FRAME FITTINGS should be of highest accuracy available, with close fits between the tubes and the lugs. All lugs should be rectified to correct angles before building of frame, but preferably lugs which are accurate to ± 0.5° should be used. Simple lug profiles are best.
FRAME BUILDING should be carried out in stages, each stage to be carried out to finished dimensions. ‘Setting’ is virtually impossible other than for minute movements, and must be avoided.
JOINTING. Cleanliness of joint surfaces is essential. Jointing should be carried out at the minimum temperature possible with the rod, as recommended. Joints should be assembled ready fluxed with the flux in ‘paste’ form. If only dry powder flux is available this can be made to a paste with pure ‘corn oil’. The rod should be kept well fluxed with dry flux.
Jointing is best done with an oxy-acetylene torch using a small tip and a ‘soft’ neutral flame. Heat should be concentrated in the lug and not applied to the tube and the work should be carried out as rapidly as possible. Simple lug and bottom bracket profiles help in achieving quick clean joints at minimum temperatures. If the material of the lug is thick it should be thinned down beforehand, so that minimum heat input is required.
Forks can be conveniently made in two stages, jointing the fork column to the fork crown as stage one, and then putting in the fork blades. A lower temperature can be used with this method than if the operator attempts to joint the complete fork in one pass.
Removal of flux residue after jointing is best done in a flux removal bath. If shot blowing is used only the finest shot should be employed.
Note: Temperature over 700° will seriously affect the strength of the finished frame.
GENERAL. There are hazards in using fluxes and rods as prescribed and attention should be paid to operator safety in the form of fume extraction and precautions in dealing with poisonous substances. Full reference should be made to suppliers’ data sheets on such matters.
TECHNICAL FACILITIES
Reynolds technical team comprises staff gathered from many fields of skill and knowledge who are qualified both academically and by experience. They are backed by the vast resources of the Research and Development department of the Tube Investments Group. This team is always available for discussions with customers on the technical aspects of Reynolds 753.
