Cycling is rapidly becoming one of America’s most popular recreational activities.
Fuji bicycles have been there every step of the way.
We build bikes for not only the most demanding cyclist, but for transportation use, off-road riding, racing, or just plain fun.
So join us today for a ride and find yourself on a Fuji.

[The left page of the opening spread, a short statement set in white type on a dark textured background beneath the photograph of an unpainted, polished metal top tube with two cable guides on its upper side, which runs across the full width of the page and on into the next. A pale band of glare from the curve of the paper runs down the right edge at the gutter.]

[The right page of the opening spread, a close photograph of an unpainted, polished metal frame on a dark textured background, showing the top tube with a cable guide meeting the seat cluster with its binder bolt, and the seat tube and seat stays running down to the lower edge. Two inset color photographs at left show street racing: a rider in a striped jersey cornering past spectators behind an orange safety fence, and two women racers in white jerseys lettered “Sundance Fuji” fastening their helmets among other riders at the start. The page carries no printed lettering.]

FIND YOURSELF ON A FUJI

FUJI BICYCLES: A BRIEF HISTORY
In the beginning there was the wheel . . .Soon after Fuji built the bicycle. Far fetched?? perhaps! Nonetheless Fuji has been building bicycles since 1899. As a matter of fact Fuji was one of the first Japanese bicycle companies to export quality bicycles to the U.S.
Many technological and aesthetic attributes insured a worldwide reputation, unparalleled to none. This unrelenting quest for excellence does not stop. Outlined below is a brief history of Fuji America’s technological innovations.

1971: First company to import a brand-name bicycle specifically designed for the U.S. market.
1975: First to develop and market double-butted Cromoly and Hi-Ten tubings.
1977: First to introduce twelve-speed gearing on production bikes.
1978: First to use sealed bearing hubs on popular priced bikes.
1980: Introduced first commuter bicycle designed specifically for the needs of the urban cyclist.
1982: Introduced Quad-butted Valite and Cromoly tubing.
1983: Developed and produced SCCR all-weather tires.
1985: First to develop 24/27 inch wheel combination model designed specifically for the smaller adult cyclist.
1987: Introduced 100% Titanium tubing bicycles at marketable price points.
1988: First to market an indexed 6 speed city bike designed with fashion and function as its primary attributes.

Today, Fuji America continues to pioneer in areas of cycling technology where no one else has dared to tread. Our new Feather triple and quad butted channeled tubing is our latest step in developing the most beneficial yet reliable bicycle tubing possible. Innovation is sought not merely for the sake of innovation, but rather for its functional merit. To that end, we continue our quest for excellence which is not only reflected in the diverse range of products, but also in the personnel associated with Fuji America. From research and design, sales and distribution, and most importantly our dealer network, Fuji strives to bring you the highest quality product available today.

[The “FIND YOURSELF ON A FUJI” page, a brief history of Fuji in two columns of text beneath a large dark heading and a gray rule, with a list of dated firsts running from 1971 to 1988. At lower left a studio photograph shows three men and two women in Fuji shirts, caps and headbands posed around a light blue bicycle.]

WHAT MAKES A BICYCLE A FUJI?

FRAME MATERIALS
TITANIUM TUBING
The tubing of the future is here! Fuji engineers, under the direction of Dr. Shoichiro Sugihara, have been working jointly with our titanium tubing manufacturer to develop this space-age bicycle frame material.
In 1989, Fuji offers two titanium models with characteristics overshadowing other racing machines of comparable value. Among the benefits of titanium tubing are:

•Strength-to-weight ratio—Titanium has a yield strength three to four times stronger than steel, yet is over 40% lighter.
•Corrosion-resistance—In its natural polished form, Fuji Titanium tubing is corrosion-proof. Standing water or perspiration won’t faze our tubing at all!
•Enduranace (strength) limit—This is the level of stress a tube is able to tolerate. The endurance limit of Fuji Titanium tubing is at least double that of any other tubing available today!

FEATHER TUBING
Fuji is another step closer to its goal of producing the optimum bicycle tubing. Fuji Feather tubing, a combination of chromium, manganese, and molybdenum, assures superior strength-to-weight stiffness properties. Because of its unique composition, Fuji Feather tubing can be produced in many different wall thicknesses, including channeling, in order to best suit the needs and constraints of a wide spectrum of bicycles.

BUTTED AND CHANNELED TUBING
BUTTED TUBING
Wall thickness of bicycle tubing greatly affects the weight, stiffness, and strength of a frame. In double-butted tubing, the ends of the tube are thicker, than the middle, reducing weight while retaining strength and stiffness. Fuji’s SI35 triple and SI45 quadruple butted tubing varies for the ultimate strength-to-weight ratio, thereby addressing the complexity of varying stresses throughout the frame.

Double-Butted Tubing

CHANNELED TUBING
Both Fuji SI35 triple and SI45 quadruple butted Feather Cromoly tubing are available with a new design feature. Precision-drawn channels are formed into both ends of the inner walls of the main tubes of the frame. As result, the channeled tube weighs less, but retains all of its original strength and stiffness.
This combination of our exclusive tubings and technical innovations clearly establishes Fuji as a frontrunner in bicycle technology.

[The “WHAT MAKES A BICYCLE A FUJI?” page, a text page in two columns under a large dark heading and a gray rule, explaining titanium, Feather, butted and channeled tubing with drop capitals opening each section. Three gray line drawings of tube sections, labeled T1 to T4 for the wall thicknesses, compare quad, triple and double butting, and a larger drawing at lower right shows a channeled tube in section.]

FRAME GEOMETRY

FRAME GEOMETRY
The geometry of the bicycle frame is established by eight critical dimensions which, when matched to the engineering characteristics of the tubing material used, determine the handling characteristics of a bike. These eight critical dimensions and how they most directly affect the bike are:

a. Seat Tube Length governs the size of the frame and influences the other critical dimensions. Seat tube length, bottom bracket drop and wheel diameter together determine the overall size of the bike. Generally, you should select the smallest frame size you can ride comfortably, and in no case should you select a bike that you cannot straddle with both feet flat on the ground.
All Fuji bicycles are measured from the center of the B/B to the top of the seat tube.

b. Top Tube Length influences riding position and wheelbase. Its minimum dimension is restricted by the need for clearance between the front wheel and the pedals.

c. Chainstay Length positions the rear wheel and controls clearance for fenders or clearance between the rider’s heel and the panniers on a touring bike.

d. Seat Tube Angle is the determining factor in positioning the rider’s center of gravity, and thereby controls the bike’s center of gravity and the riding position. To some degree, it also affects road shock absorption, in that a shallower angle allows the tube to absorb more road shock.

e. Head Tube Angle influences steering response, handling characteristics and front wheel road shock absorption, and affects some of the other critical dimensions.

f. Fork Rake or Offset works with the head tube angle to determine steering characteristics and responsiveness to directional change.

g. Bottom Bracket Height is the distance between the ceneter of the bottom bracket and the ground. It determines the bicycles center of gravity as well as the clearance of the crankset during cornering and from debris.

h. Wheelbase influences the bike’s ride characteristics. A long wheelbase tends to be more comfortable and have better straight running characteristics. A short wheelbase tends to make a stiffer bike with quicker response to directional change.

THE FUJI WAY

As you can see, for almost a century, Fuji bicycles have not only been the leaders in innovative design, but first in offering a broad selection of models for any style of riding. Our commitment doesn’t stop here. Each Fuji bicycle is professionally assembled by an expert at a Fuji authorized dealer for the highest standards of performance. Each Fuji is backed by a limited life-time frame warranty and a one year parts warranty. Innovation, quality and tradition, we’ ve been building bikes for years this way.
That’s the Fuji way.
