FIND YOURSELF

FUJI BICYCLES: A BRIEF HISTORY
In the beginning there was the wheel…Soon after Fuji built the bicycle. Far fetched?? perhaps! Nonetheless Fuji has been building bicycles since 1899. As a matter of fact Fuji was one of the first Japanese bicycle companies to export quality bicycles to the U.S.
Many technological and aesthetic attributes insured a worldwide reputation, unparalleied to none. This unrelenting quest for excellence does not stop. Outlined below is a brief history of Fuji America’s technological innovations.

1971: First company to import a brand-name bicycle specifically designed for the U.S. market.
1975: First to develop and market double-butted Cromoly and Hi-Ten tubings.
1977: First to introduce twelve-speed gearing on production bikes.
1978: First to use sealed bearing hubs on popular priced bikes.
1980: Introduced first commuter bicycle designed specifically for the needs of the urban cyclist.
1982: Introduced Quad-butted Valite and Cromoly tubing.
1983: Developed and produced SCCR all-weather tires.
1984: Introduced a high quality city bike with oversized tires.

1985: First to develop 24/27 inch wheel combination model designed specifically for the smaller adult cyclist.
1987: Introduced 100% Titanium tubing bicycles at marketable price points.

Today, Fuji America continues to pioneer in areas of cycling technology where no one else has dared to tread. Our new Feather triple and quad butted channeled tubing is our latest step in developing the most beneficial yet reliable bicycle tubing possible. Innovation is sought not merely for the sake of innovation, but rather for its functional merit. To that end, we continue our quest for excellence which is not only reflected in the diverse range of products, but also in the personnel associated with Fuji America. From research and design, sales and distribution, and most importantly our dealer network, Fuji strives to bring you the highest quality product available today.

INTRODUCING YOUR FUJI DEALER
A new bike is a considerable investment, so where you buy it is as important as what you decide to buy.
A Fuji dealer and his staff are professionals who take pride in using their technical and mechanical skills, their bicycling experience, their product knowledge and their judgment to

[The left page of the opening spread, headed by the first half of the slogan “FIND YOURSELF ON A Fuji.” in large dark capitals, under a band photograph of an unpainted, polished metal top tube with two brazed cable guides, and two columns of text: a brief company history with a dated list of firsts, and the start of a note on the Fuji dealer. The dealer text continues mid-sentence on the facing page.]

help you get the most from your investment. Their high level of competence and dependability can increase your long-term enjoyment of bicycling.
Using his expertise to help make the choices that best fit your needs, your authorized Fuji dealer will help you make sure that the bike you choose is the correct size for maximum performance and safety, that it has the features that fit the kind of riding you plan to do, that you select those accessories that will give you the greatest utility and enjoyment, and that your purchase fits your budget.
Once the bike and accessories have been selected, the Fuji dealer will make sure that it is assembled and fine-tuned to the very high standards of performance which Fuji America demands and of which the bike is capable.
And a Fuji dealer’s involvement with your bicycling pleasure doesn’t stop when you roll your new Fuji out the door. He and his staff want to make sure that your Fuji is properly maintained and kept in peak operating condition. And should you ever need his help, you can depend on your Fuji dealer to be there. He’s an independent businessman who has committed substantial capital, energy and knowledge to your continued enjoyment of cycling. You can count on your Fuji dealer to make sure the Fuji you buy is the best bicycle for your needs.

[The right page of the opening spread, completing the slogan “FIND YOURSELF ON A Fuji.” in large dark lettering beside a close photograph of an unpainted, polished metal frame: the end of the top tube with a cable guide, the seat cluster with its binder eye, and the seat tube and seat stays running down to the lower edge. A single column of text at left concludes the note on the Fuji dealer, and type from the following pages shows faintly through the paper behind the frame.]

FUJI FRAMES

The frame is the skeleton of the bicycle. It must position the rider for maximum performance, comfort and safety.
It must position the components precisely so that they work in perfect harmony with the rider and with each other. It must provide the structural stiffness needed to maintain perfect alignment under stress, with a degree of controlled resiliency that gives the whole bike a sense of responsiveness and unity with the rider.
Two key elements are responsible for how well a frame carries out these functions! The material from which it is made, and the geometry to which it is constructed. Even a subtle change in geometry or materials will have a direct effect on the feel and handling.
The material from which the frame tubing is made affects the weight, stiffness and strength of the bicycle. Many Fuji bicycles are brazed of Fuji Feather chrome molybdenum tubing which was developed jointly by Fuji and one of the world’s foremost bicycle tubing manufacturers.

FRAME MATERIALS
TITANIUM TUBING
The tubing of the future is here! Fuji engineers, under the direction of Dr. Shoichiro Sugihara, have been working jointly with our titanium tubing manufacturer to develop this space-age bicycle frame material.
In 1988, Fuji offers two titanium models with characteristics overshadowing other racing machines of comparable value. Among the benefits of titanium tubing are!

•Strength-to-weight ratio—Titanium has a yield strength three to four times stronger than steel, yet is over 40% lighter.
•Corrosion-resistance—In its natural polished form, Fuji Titanium tubing is corrosion-proof. Standing water or perspiration won’t faze our tubing at all!
•Enduranace (strength) limit—This is the level of stress a tube is able to tolerate. The endurance limit of Fuji Titanium tubing is at least double that of any other tubing available today!

FEATHER TUBING
Fuji is another step closer to its goal of producing the optimum bicycle tubing. Fuji Feather tubing, a combination of chromium, manganese, and molybdenum, assures superior strength-to-weight stiffness properties. Because of its unique composition, Fuji Feather tubing can be produced in many different wall thicknesses, including channeling, in order to best suit the needs and constraints of a wide spectrum of bicycles.

BUTTED AND CHANNELED TUBING
BUTTED TUBING
Wall thickness of bicycle tubing greatly affects the weight, stiffness, and strength of a frame. In double-butted tubing, the ends of the tube are thicker, than the middle, reducing weight while retaining strength and stiffness. Fuji’s triple and quadruple butted tubing varies for the ultimate strength-to-weight ratio, thereby addressing the complexity of varying stresses throughout the frame.

CHANNELED TUBING
Both Fuji triple and quadruple butted Feather Cromoly tubing are available with a unique new design feature. Precision-drawn channels are formed into both ends of the inner walls of the main tubes of the frame. As a result, the channeled tube weighs less, but retains all its original strength and stiffness.
This combination of our exclusive tubings and technical innovations clearly establishes Fuji as a frontrunner in bicycle technology.

[A text page headed “FUJI FRAMES” in large dark capitals, with an introduction in bold type and two columns on frame materials (titanium and Feather tubing) and on butted and channeled tubing, each section opening with a large drop capital. Three cutaway drawings shaded in light blue show the wall sections of quad, triple and double butted tubes with their thicknesses marked T1 to T4, and a fourth at lower right shows a channeled tube.]

FRAME GEOMETRY
The geometry of the bicycle frame is established by eight critical dimensions which, when matched to the engineering characteristics of the tubing material used, determine the handling characteristics of a bike. These eight critical dimensions and how they most directly affect the bike are:

a. Seat Tube Length governs the size of the frame and influences the other critical dimensions. Seat tube length, bottom bracket drop and wheel diameter together determine the overall size of the bike. Generally, you should select the smallest frame size you can ride comfortably, and in no case should you select a bike that you cannot straddle with both feet flat on the ground.

b. Top Tube Length influences riding position and wheelbase. Its minimum dimensions is restricted by the need for clearance between the front wheel and the pedals.

c. Chainstay Length positions the rear wheel and controls clearance for fenders or clearance between the rider’s heel and the panniers on a touring bike.

d. Seat Tube Angle is the determining factor in positioning the rider’s center of gravity, and thereby controls the bike’s center of gravity and the riding position. To some degree, it also affects road shock absorption, in that a shallower angle allows the tube to absorb more road shock.

e. Head Tube Angle influences steering response and handling characteristics and front wheel road shock absorption, and affects some of the other critical dimensions.

f. Fork Rake or Offset works with the head tube angle to determine steering characteristics and responsiveness to directional change.

g. Bottom Bracket Drop is the distance between the wheel centerline and the center of the bottom bracket. It determines center of gravity height and road clearance.

h. Wheelbase influences the bike’s ride characteristics. A long wheelbase tends to be more comfortable and have better straight running characteristics. A short wheelbase tends to make a stiffer bike with quicker response to directional change.
