AIDS TO HAPPY CYCLING
Many years have passed since this little booklet was first
published and it is still regarded as the standard reference
list for Club and Racing Cyclists.
The 1954 edition has been redesigned into three sections;
Clothing (sub-divided Club and Racing), Accessories and
Sundries. I hope that this will assist you when looking for
particular items.
The ” Worthy ” and ” Allez ” goods are the result of
collaboration by my efficient and up-to-date staff.
The other proprietary lines have been selected to give
the best service and be in reasonable supply. I would
specially recommend to you the Continental productions
under the names of ” D’Alessandro “, ” Regina “,
” Campagnola ” and ” Fiamme “. These are un-
doubtably the best of their types and have my personal
backing.
We regret we must state that owing to present conditions,
prices are liable to alteration without notice. All prices
include Tax in the few cases where payable.

FEEDING BOTTLES
The “ALLEZ!” bottle is in a class of its own.
Spun from stout gauge aluminium, with corrugated sides, it can withstand an abnormal amount of knocking about. The diameter of 2⅞” is most convenient for the hand and all corners are rounded. The interior has been treated so as to eliminate any possibility of harmful effect on the fluid carried. An aluminium capped cork completes a first-class job. Weight only 4 ozs. each.

THE BRITISH BENELUX. The gear which was used with such success on British roads during 1953, 3, 4, or 5 speed. Provides closest contact between cog and jockey-sprocket to give a snappy change action and will work perfectly with either pointed or square form freewheel teeth. Claimed to be the newest, simplest, most adaptable gear for every require-

CAMPAGNOLO GEARS.
This is the gear which, now brought to perfection has captured the majority of Continental ” aces “. Its reliability has only to be experienced to be appre-
ciated to the full. The materials used have been selected after careful tests, whilst the engineering skill is evident to any one examining the gear.
The design is unique and, should the cable break the gear will run in alignment with any chosen sprocket.
It does cost more than others, but if you want to keep free from the re-
port ” . . . had trouble with his gears “, this is the gear for you !
Users include the first and second in the World Road Championship, both professional (Coppi and Dercyke) and amateur, the European Professional ” Best all-rounder ” (Challenge Desgrange-Colombo) Petrucci, the Italian Champion Magni, the Bordeaux–Paris winner Kubler, the famous Swiss Koblet, Fornana and many others.
It is not necessary to have special rear ends on your cycle although, if you are buying a new frame, the Campagnolo ends, with automatic centring, are a good investment.
The models are:
GRAN SPORT Derailleur … 75/–
GRAN SPORT Front Changer … 45/–
Lever or handlebar controlled. If ordered as a pair they can be supplied with a double lever.
For those who think the ” GRAN SPORT ” too ” pricey “, there are the ” SPORT ” Series. The Rear, a similar action to ” GRAN SPORT ” but not the Twin Roller, whilst the Front Changer is con-
trolled by a small lever fitted just above the changing mechanism. The gears are both of fine workmanship and can readily be recom-
mended.

TUBULARS
D’Alessandro
Ever since the introduction to this
country of these fine Italian Tubu-
lars sales have increased each year.
On the Continent, also, their popu-
larity continues to advance.
In this country I know that during
1953 at least seven National Cham-
pionships have been won on them—
there may be more—amateurs don’t
advertise. I also know of National
Records broken during the past year
by D’Alessandro riders.
On the Continent many important successes have been
gained; an outstanding example being the Bordeaux—
Paris where the winner (Ferdi Kubler), the second (Van
Est) and the third (De Santi) were all on D’Alessandros.
A tribute to the esteem in which they are held by the men
whose bread and butter depends largely upon their tyres.
I can therefore recommend these tyres with complete
confidence and wish all D’Alessandro riders another suc-
cessful season.
With the increasing demand, I have been able to obtain
some reductions in the prices of the best of these tyres
and I am happy to pass these on to you.
The following is the 1953 range :
IMPERFORABILE. The “unpuncturable” tubular. Well, not quite
of course, but the exceedingly elastic raw rubber band between the
tread and the base effectively prevents flints, thorns, etc. penetrating.
Cunningly woven from Sea Island Cotton fabric with a light pure
rubber inner tube this tyre can be relied upon for many miles of racing.
Weight 9¾ ozs. Usually with file pattern tread but can be supplied with
matt tread … … … … … … … 75/6
LIGHT PATH. A tyre for the expert whether Track, or Short dis-
tance Road man. Many successes have been gained on these tyres.
Translucent with narrow smooth red band. Weight: 7 ozs. … 62/6
[Folio 30.]
[A drawing of the D’Alessandro script logo above a drawing of a cut-away tubular tire showing its casing and stitched base.]
— Page 33 —
GIRO D’ITALIA. A fine road tyre for hard wear. Not quite so
“pricey” as the Imperforabile it will never the less give many miles
of speedy racing. Narrow black file pattern tread with latex sides.
Weight 10½ ozs. … … … … … … 57/6
CRITERIUM. Introduced last season, this tyre has quickly established
itself as a tyre for all British hard tracks and also as a popular short
distance road tyre. Smooth black tread. Light fabric. Weight 8¼ ozs.
48/6
IMPERIAL. A reliable light road tyre for all-round work. Narrow
black tread with non-slip design. Latex sides. Weight 12½ ozs. 42/6
LEONE. Still the tyre most in demand in the
D’Alessandro range, this is a strong and
reliable tubular largely used for circuit
racing. Narrow file pattern tread with
translucent sides. Rubber base tape.
Weight 13¼ ozs. … … … 39/6
BALILLA. A tubular which is still speedy
despite its remarkable price. Dark green
tread file pattern and open-sided.
Weight 14 ozs. … … … 31/11
NEW ” WORTHY “. (As illustrated). The
latest introduction; made specially by
Signor D’Alessandro, to my specification,
for the British market. Over-size section with prominent file pattern
tread extending well down the sides. Walls are well protected with
latex dressing. I am confident that this tyre will be used with every
satisfaction for all everyday riding and training. With its wide non-slip
tread it will also fill a long-felt want for a reliable grass tyre, whilst
tandem riders will pronounce it ” just the job “. Weight 16 ozs. 39/6
SILKS. PATH 5¼ ozs. … 74/6 IMPERFORABILE 8¾ ozs. 89/6

WHEELS
Now there are wheels and wheels—Holdsworth’s are the last word.
All these wheels are the result of careful attention to detail.
They are built in Holdsworth’s workshops, by experienced
mechanics, with only one end in view, and that is—a perfect wheel.
Ask the man who rides them, and while they may have equals, as
far as workmanship, materials and general finish are concerned, Holds-
worth wheels can have NO superiors.
BUILD UP the price of the wheels you require by taking the price
of the hubs and rims and adding 24/- for double-butted spokes and
building. Example:

Quotations for work other than mentioned above will gladly be given
upon receipt of particulars.
NOTES WHEN SENDING FRAMES
You need not strip off the old enamel. All accessories should be re-

NOTES RE ENAMELLING
As a lustre finish shows up all the imperfections in the metal
of a frame, you are strongly advised to specify an enamel finish
to frames which are rust-pitted or to cheap grade frames, as
it tends to ” cover up ” better.
Other makers’ transfers will be fitted to frames during renovation if
requested, where these are obtainable, and they will be charged at net cost.
