NEW HOLDSWORTH MODELS
THREE steel-welded bicycles are listed in the 1939 range of machines by W. F. Holdsworth (121, Lennard Road, Beckenham, Kent). In addition, two other new models have been introduced, the “L’Internationale,” for massed-start events and fast, long-distance road events, and the “Empire Champion Path,” a mount suitable for cement and grass.
Of the welded machines, the “La Quelda Club” has been produced for the enthusiast who requires this type of construction at a moderate price. It costs £9 17s. 6d. and can be obtained with any angles required. The “La Quelda Flyer” has a similar frame, but the finish and equipment is of a more expensive nature. At £12 12s. 6d. this model has an excellent specification, including Continental “Durax” chainwheel and cranks or the latest Williams C1200 set, high-pressure rims and tyres on “Airlite” hubs.
Three steel-welded Queldas. “Empire Champion Path”–a modern track-racing mount
(Above) The “La Quelda Club,” price £9 17s. 6d., a popular mount for the clubman. (Left) “The Empire Champion Path,” an ideal machine for the sprinter.
Brooks B.17 saddle or to choice. “Bulla” brake, super “Silvere Maes” dural handlebar bend and polished dural mudguards
With two brakes and an Osgear the price is £13 19s. 6d., or £14 10s. with a Simplex Professional gear.
In the super class there is the “La Quelda Supreme,” costing £16 17s. 6d. with alloy accessories and £17 17s. with sprints.
Massed-start riders have in the “L’Internationale” an ideal mount for the job, the frame angles being 73½ degrees head and 71½ degrees seat. Attractively designed, cut-out lugs are used and 531 tubing ensures minimum weight with maximum
strength and life. Alloy fittings are used extensively and the price of £13 19s. 6d. includes “Conloy” Osgear. This price includes high-pressure rims and tyres or, if required, “Jenatzy Simplex” over-size high-pressure tyres can be specified. With sprints the price is £14 19s. 6d
The remaining new model for mention, the “Empire Champion Path,” costs £13 19s. 6d. with Brampton fittings and £15 10s. 6d. with Chater-Lea or B.S.A. fittings. Standard frame angles recommended are 74 degrees head and 71 degrees seat, but they can be varied to choice.
Of the old favourites, the Upright Typhoon is the cheapest at £8 2s. 6d., with 531 tubing, the new John Bull “Safety Speed” tyres, Williams chainwheel and cranks, Brooks saddle and dural mudguards. An up-to-date model with three-speed gear is the “Modele Milanais” at £10 10s., and the Cyclone, price £11 5s., is a high-class mount for club riding and time trials.
Of Continental design, the “La Variable” costs only £9 9s. with racing derailleur, and the “Super Rapide” at £9 2s. 6d. is a popular club model. Trackmen have already appreciated the value of the “Roi-de-Velo” at £11 11s., and it certainly conforms to the high standard demanded. An ideal model for touring and camping is the “Stelvio.” It is fully equipped and costs £11 11s. Three tandems are listed, the “Cyclonic” at £19 10s., the “Road Race” at £15 19s. 6d., and the variable-geared model at £17 17s.
Many attractive and new finishes are available, details of which will be found in the latest catalogue, available free on application.
