YEAR 1936

W. F. HOLDSWORTH

Illustration by kind permission of Proprietors of ” Cycling.”

[The front cover, filled by a pen-and-ink drawing inside a ruled frame: a village street crossing a stone bridge, the heavy coped parapet running diagonally across the foreground, a cyclist in a dark jersey riding away along the top of the bank at the right with two more figures in the lane beyond, and thatched and tiled cottages with smoking chimneys and a bare tree behind. A cursive signature with a long horizontal flourish lies at the lower right of the drawing, above the hand-lettered caption.]

The Cash on Delivery Scheme is splendid for last-minute delivery—perhaps you have delayed ordering something you want immediately. All you need do is to send us a note of your requirements (a postcard will do)—no bother with cheques or Postal Orders, no delay in registering letters, you simply pay the Postman at the door. We pay postage and all C.O.D. charges on all orders of £1 or more.

THE BEST WAY TO SEND MONEY is by Postal Order or Money Order. If Postal Orders are crossed with two parallel lines, and marked ” and Co.,” and the Counterfoil kept, this is an absolutely safe method, as the Order can only be Cashed through a Bank—in this case it is quite unnecessary to register the letter. PLUS-FOURS.

PLUS-SIXES. KNICKERS.

All these garments have one hip (buttoned flap) and two side pockets. They are fitted with both belt loops and brace buttons. Ample double-seat is placed so that it takes all saddle wear, and you know there is also a spare patch supplied which is all turned and hemmed ready to be sewn on directly the original shows signs of wear.

Plus-fours are really plus-fours. Cloth is not skimped, so that there are good full turn-overs. At the same time, all unnecessary cloth at knee-band is cut away, and the cloth mitred to fit. This prevents bunching and unnecessary warmth. Pleated fronts which ensure a good ” fall ” and ” set ” and wide knee-bands for turn-over topped stockings.

Plus-sixes have an even more ample turn-over than the plus-fours described above.—Same price as Plus-fours.

COMFORT SUITS.

There is a difference between an ordinary Plus-four Suit and a suit made for Cycling. One point is that the ordinary tailor only makes for smartness on foot, and cannot know the little adjustments which are so necessary if the jacket is not going to ” pull ” when you are in the saddle, when, as a result, the sleeves will ride up most uncomfortably.

Holdsworth has been specialising in Cycling Suits—Comfort Suits—for the past 12 years, so you can be sure you’ll receive a real Cycling Suit when you order a ” Comfort Suit.”

The Ever Popular LOUNGE STYLE with Plus-fours or Plus-sixes.

Fully lined jacket with inside pocket, with a button flap to prevent your pocket-book from falling out. Cuffs can be turned up. Three outside pockets.

Also with pleated back Jackets—” Comfy Cut ” and ” New Comfort.”

STOCK SUIT PRICES.

Stock Suits are Not Factory-made, but cut by a tailor’s cutter and sewn by tailors. There is no difference in the quality and finish of these suits compared with the corresponding suits made to measure.

If, therefore, you are of average build you can save time and money by having a stock sized suit. The range is : Chests, 34, 36, 38, 40 and 42 in. ; Waists, 30, 32, 34, 36, and 38 in.

WORTHY SHOES.

You can be quite sure that your cycling shoes are going to give you good service, and to be designed for the job, if you make certain of this brand on the sole.

“Worthy” Shoes are made from the best materials. Full chrome leathers that will resist the weather and remain soft. British “bends” for the soles. They are made by British “Union” workmen, in a modern factory with the latest equipment.

The Genuine ROUGH STUFF,
17/6

Often copied, but never excelled. Holdsworth was the first to introduce this pattern shoe for off-the-beaten-track cycling. Made from fully-chromed rich tan or black Scotch grain leather. Ski pattern front and web tongue keeps all wet out. Fine solid bend sole, with narrow sewn welt (all sizes to Size 9 will go on 3¾ in. pedal). Stiffened back. Will keep out the wettest weather and stand up to the hardest wear. For your own protection be sure that your Shoe bears the “Worthy” Brand and “Genuine Rough Stuff.”

ALL-ROUNDER
Shoe 16/6

Here is a Shoe which meets a long-felt want. Sturdily made to withstand wet weather—yet not too heavy.

LOOK AT THESE POINTS—

Upper of Tan Willow Calf, with waterproof dressing of Meltonia.

Sole from Puritan Bend, specially treated with oil to keep out all wet.

Insole Lining “Darex”—tougher than ordinary leather, Lock-stitched for Elasticity.

“Stay-put” flap tongue, which lies down naturally.

“Uskide” heel, giving long wear.

Pedal patch. Supported back to heel. Deep tan finish.

[Folio 12.]

[Right-hand page.]

SOUTHALL, 18/6

This is Frank’s special design. The hand-stitched sole runs in one piece from toe to heel, thus giving support to instep. Uppers of soft selected willow calf. Large correctly cut flap tongue. Brown trimmed black.

OPPY, 16/6

The choice of the great little Australian, and taken back by him to Australia. Soft black kid upper. Very supple waist, horse-shoe heel. Hidden clump under sole. Flap tongue. Lacing to toe.

MANCHESTER, 16/6

Designed by Manchester’s most experienced sprinter. This rider gives you in this shoe the benefit of his knowledge of the shoe required for speedy track – work. Fine soft tan all-chrome calf, with white facings. Hand-made throughout on Pump Principle.

ROSSITER PATTERN, 14/6

This is a machine – made shoe the same design and cut of the famous Hand-made Rossiter. The uppers are cut from a little heavier leather, but the finished article is very definitely a “classy” shoe. Tan with black trimmings. Large well-designed flap tongue, black eyelets, reinforced sole, etc.

BIKESHU, 13/6

A very great favourite with many cyclists. Its flap-over front effectually keeps out wet and dust, whilst the broad elastic strip underneath the flap ensures the shoe gripping the instep. In Black or Tan Box, with good sole and heel and stiffened back.

[Folio 13.]

[The left-hand page carries an oval trade mark reading HOLDSWORTHS / THE “Worthy” BRAND / BECKENHAM, a large halftone of a heavy brogue-style cycling shoe below it, and a second shoe, a laced all-rounder, at the foot of the column. The right-hand page shows five more shoes in halftone: a laced shoe and a plain lace-up across the top, a light pump-style shoe at the middle right, a strapped slipper-like shoe at the middle left, and a flap-over shoe at the lower right.]

— Page 9 —
NEW ROADWORTHY, 13/6

Tan Calf.
The popular flap tongue with a soft easy-fitting upper. Plenty of room at toe, and stiffened back. Supple sole and light heel. Pedal patch. In Tan Calf. A most popular shoe.

COMFY GRIP, 15/6

A similar shoe to the Rossiter pattern, but with neat loose flaps which are caught up when lacing shoe, and give support to instep. Wonderfully comfortable in wear, and saves fatigue.

FLEXI-SPRINT. Zip or Lace. Without doubt the finest Racing Shoe ever made. Elastic insert with all-way stretch. This elastic is guaranteed to last life of Shoe. Very light, only 12 oz. per pair. Strong because it is lockstitched. Mellow tanned “Puritan” Bend Sole. “Darex” insole. So flexible that shoes can be doubled in two and put in your pocket.

Frank Southall says :—”They’re O.K.” … 18/6

RACING
WEAR.

In 1935 Mr. Bruce Small, the Australians’ capable manager, came to Holdsworth to supply all their racing wear. All goods were paid for, and no payments made to the riders or to their manager.

Frank Southall, together with numerous Amateur Riders, also continued to get their wants from Holdsworth.

TIGHTS.

The secret of Holdsworth’s Tights is that they are made by a firm of theatrical tight makers.

The cut has been altered to meet the special requirements of cycle racing, thus the backs are cut with plenty of length to prevent gaping when “down to it.”

Legs are well shaped and feet made sock fashion to eliminate unnecessary seams. Double-seats placed so that they take all saddle-wear. When ordering, please quote inside leg length and state whether slightly or sturdily built.

All Tights are Hawley’s Hygienic Black. These are not dyed, so that it is impossible for colour to fade or run. The colour is in the fabric.

CAPE CARRIERS.

You can be sure that you won’t chafe your Waterproofs if you use a cape carrier.

It should be noted that in Holdsworth’s Cape Carriers (the original carriers), the straps pass twice through the carrier, which is reinforced at this point with leather patch. This makes a much firmer and stronger attachment to saddle.

Racing Men will appreciate that they are most suitable for TUBULAR CARRYING, as the carrier, although undone, remains attached to the saddle, and the punctured tyre can be attached to the machine in the minimum of time.

New GOLDSKIN “IMPREGNABLE” FABRIC.

This is an exclusive fabric which is definitely stronger than any other Oilskin.

Here is the proof :—

Certificate issued by the City of Bradford Conditioning House, and this is an extract from their certificate :—

Strength Elongation
“A” .. 196½ lbs. —.7 in.
“B” .. 166½ lbs. —.6 in.
“C” .. 136½ lbs. —.6 in.

“A” was New Impregnable Fabric.
“B” was previous Goldskin.
“C” was another very well-known
make of oilskin cape.

This definitely proves that the New Impregnable Goldskin is 20 per cent. stronger than the old Goldskin and over 50 per cent. stronger than the fabric from which one of the best known and expensive oilskin capes is made.

— Page 15 —
CONCEALED ZIP CAPE.

This is without doubt the ideal fastening for a cape because the Zip works from the inside, and it is no longer necessary to put the arms outside to do it up. Also it is so easily adjusted when riding. If you’re too warm, zip the opening down just as far as you like. If it comes on to rain heavily again, zip it up again and no need to get off the cycle or wave the arms about outside the cape. And the Zip—all British—is covered by two neat little flaps of Goldskin, making sure all is weatherproof.

All IMPREGNABLE GOLDSKIN CAPES are made as follows

COLOUR.—Khaki or Black.
CUT.—Length at front, 42 in. Length at back, 30 in. Full at skirt, width around hem being 120 in.
These capes are cut with generous shoulder room. This is a most important point, as otherwise full advantage cannot be taken of the size.
FINISH.—Velvet-lined collar. Leather-backed buttons. Two thumb loops accurately placed for dropped bars.
Buttoned fastening capes have new pattern neck-opening, which distributes the strain upon the stitching at this vulnerable spot.

LAWRENCE HATS.

Made of Goldskin with Bluemel’s green or amber celluloid peaks (the peak is detachable and can be replaced if cracked). Goldskin flap at back to keep neck dry. Lighter than Sou’-wester. A great boon to spectacled riders, as peak keeps rain off glasses. Also peak is anti-dazzle for night riding.

IMPREGNABLE GOLDSKIN LEGGINGS.

Wear longer than other makes.
By the use of Goldskin Leggings, in conjunction with Cape and Sou’-wester, it is possible to keep dry in the worst of weather.

Patent Clip Fastenings.
These are leather-backed. Under-straps of heavy quality elastic 12/6
Zip Fastenings.

WORTHY BAGS

You can be sure that a “Worthy” Bag will do its job specially. The following range comprises Bags for all purposes and to suit all pockets.

If you have any special requirements we are at all times pleased to make bags to customer’s specifications. Delivery usually 10 to 14 days. Prices reasonable.

VORTEX FITTING.

Keeps the Contents of the Bag Spotless.

The Vortex, which is exclusive to Holdsworth’s Bags, is a rubbered mouth-like extension, which, after the bag is packed, is closed by means of a draw cord. The bag is then strapped down in the usual manner, but not a drop of rain or speck of dust can penetrate. In an old-fashioned bag, even if fitted with extended gussets, damp and dirt work round the edges of the gussets, but this is quite impossible with the Vortex.

Simply pack bag, draw cord and strap down top of bag.

WHEELS.

This section will appeal with real energy to the enthusiasts. Now there are wheels and Wheels—these are the last word. All the wheels listed below are the result of careful attention to detail. Not built on “Piece Work” rates, or in spare time.
They are built in Holdsworth’s workshops, by experienced mechanics, with only one end in view, and that is—a perfect wheel.
Ask the man that rides them, and while they may have equals, as far as workmanship, materials and general finish are concerned, Holdsworth wheels can have NO superiors. Just try a pair.
Holdsworth Wheels all bear a special transfer—look for this on your wheels and make sure that you have a really speedy wheel.
The following prices are based upon Dunlop, Endrick or Westwood rims, black enamelled, 15/17 gauge spokes, and are less cogs and lock rings. Nickel-plated finish to the hubs.

NOTE.—If your sizes are not in this table, the gear can be arrived at by multiplying the number of teeth on chainwheel by size of wheel, and dividing the result by the number of teeth on hub cog.

[The whole page is the GEAR TABLE: a heavy-ruled box divided into four blocks of eight rows, chainwheels of 42, 44, 46 and 48 teeth set against hub cogs of 13 to 20, with the gear figures for 26 in., 27 in. and 28 in. wheels, and the NOTE in bold beneath the box. There is no illustration and no printed folio.]

HOLDSWORTH

HOLDSWORTH’S 1936
LIST OF FIRST CLASS
CYCLES & TANDEMS

Rankin Bros. Ltd., Printers, London and Bristol.

[The back cover: a thin-ruled border enclosing the heading in heavy sans capitals, and in the middle a drawing of the cycle catalog itself, tilted on its corner, its cover carrying an art-deco design of overlapping wheel circles, a fork and a saddle over broad sweeping bands, with HOLDSWORTH lettered up the lower edge; the three short lines of the call to order stand to its right, the announcement lines fill the lower third, and the printer’s imprint is set in italic outside the border at the foot. Two dark round stains and a crease mark the right-hand margin of the scan.]
