HETCHIN’S
BRITISH BICYCLE MANUFACTURERS
[Front cover: a full-bleed color photograph of the front half of a black road bicycle standing outdoors in front of trees, a brick building and a dark wall. The head lugs and fork crown are painted red and picked out with gold lining and ornamental points, “HETCHINS” runs in shaded red and gold capitals along the down tube, and a short gold script name on the top tube near the head tube is too small to read at this resolution. Visible fittings are a chrome-plated fork with curved blades, an alloy stem, dropped handlebars wrapped in black tape, brake levers with black hoods, a side-pull front brake, a front wheel with a tan-wall tire, a white water bottle in a cage on the down tube and, at the lower left edge, a crank arm and a pedal with red reflectors. A red panel at upper right carries the name HETCHIN’S in black shaded decorative capitals, the line BRITISH BICYCLE MANUFACTURERS and a small swash ornament. Creases and cracks in the print surface show as fine white lines across the photograph. The picture continues across the spine onto the back cover, which shows the rear half of the same bicycle.]

The name Hetchin’s is synonymous with top-class bicycles worldwide and reflects the image of quality, excellent design and superb finish that has been associated with this famous trademark for over 50 years of continuous production. Hetchin’s traditionally represents the pinnacle of the custom frame builder’s art, and this began in England in 1934 when Harry Hetchin and framemaker Jack Denny collaborated to build the first unique, handmade lightweight frames. For the last 25 years Harry’s son, Alf Hetchin and Jack Denny have continued to produce this aristocrat of bicycles.

‘MAGNUM OPUS DELUXE SPECIAL’ (Detail)
Jack Denny’s ornate hand-filed lugs and patented curved rear stays are still the distinctive hallmarks of todays Hetchin’s.
There is and always has been a Hetchin’s ‘look’. Defined by intricate hand-cut lugs, stylish use of chrome and paint, and the unique “Vibrant Triangle”. The bowed seatstays and ‘curly’ chainstays constitute Jack Denny’s method for adding shock-absorbing comfort to the rear triangle without decreasing lateral stiffness through the use of lighter-gauge tubing. In effect, the rear triangle is raked, enabling it to flex like a fork on rough roads.
‘NOVUS DUCTOR DELUXE SPECIAL’
1987 marked the launch of a revitalised and expanded company. Hetchin’s offers unbeatable workmanship on a uniquely British champion bike. It’s traditional design is 100 percent compatible with current components, providing a tight comfortable ride with the ultimate in style and elegance. It’s every serious cyclists dream to own a Hetchin’s.
Turn every head in the neighbourhood while you enjoy the comfort of the most stylish and elegant bicycle. With the unique curly stays you can always spot a Hetchin’s, in a crowd.
‘SCORPION BONUM DELUXE SPECIAL’
[Inside page with four color photographs on a pale backdrop and the text in three blocks. At top right two boxed close-up photographs of head tubes stand side by side, each captioned in small type reading upward along its right edge. The left one shows a pale green head tube with a maroon panel, pierced lugs lined in white and chrome-plated headset cups; the right one shows a dark green head tube between chrome-plated lugs with pierced points lined in gold and small red diamonds. Both carry the same cast head badge: a red scroll lettered HETCHINS above a shield bearing a red cross with two lion supporters, with a winged roundel enclosing a small bicycle below; the smaller lettering on the badge is not legible at this resolution. Below them, captioned ‘NOVUS DUCTOR DELUXE SPECIAL’, a bare frame and fork in pale green has a maroon head tube panel, a seat tube banded in maroon and white with a shield transfer and a tubing transfer, “HETCHINS” in shaded capitals along the down tube and chrome-plated fork ends and rear stay ends; its seat stays are bowed and its chainstays curved. At the foot, captioned ‘SCORPION BONUM DELUXE SPECIAL’, a bare frame and fork in blue has a white head tube, a white seat tube panel with blue bands and a shield transfer, lugs lined in gold, “HETCHINS” along the down tube and the same bowed seat stays and curved chainstays.]

[Typewritten price list on a single letterhead sheet with a speckled gray ground. The name HETCHIN’S stands at the head in large black shaded decorative capitals, the same lettering as on the front cover, with the shop address and telephone line in small bold type beneath it. The heading and the three frame prices are typed in a heavy bold face and the rest in a lighter typewriter face, which prints progressively fainter toward the foot of the sheet. The four names are typed in two pairs at the foot, the proprietor and manager at left and the two consultants at right, with the date line 3/88 above them at right. A short diagonal stroke at the right end of the address line appears to be a stray mark. There are no illustrations.]
