[Two leaves of one wholesaler’s catalog: the printed cover and the page of Idéale saddles inside
it. H. Julien traded as the Comptoir Vélocipédique de l’Est at 3 rue Saint-Laurent in the tenth
arrondissement, opposite the Gare de l’Est, and this is Catalogue Général No. 10, dated on its own
cover to the three seasons 1927, 1928 and 1929. That printed span is the reason this record is
dated rather than estimated, and it makes the sheet the earliest dated Idéale material in the
archive.

This is a factor’s book, not a maker’s. Julien sold general supplies for cycles and motorcycles,
pocket lamps, batteries and bulbs, and the house specialities under the name LESUPER, and page 52
is simply where Idéale falls in the saddle section. That is what makes it useful: it shows the
Idéale range as a Paris wholesaler presented it at the end of the 1920s, with the model numbers 35,
50/51, 60/61 and 103 running alongside a rival, the Incroyable No. 10, in the same list and the
same typeface. The Idéale numbering here is an older scheme than the one the Tron & Berthet catalog
of about 1936 uses; only the No. 103 survives into that book, where it is a heavy-duty model on
ribbed rails exactly as it is described here.

Every price is left blank. The line reads la pièce followed by a leader of dots, so the catalog was
issued to be used with a separate price list, the same arrangement as the c.1936 Idéale catalog
held here.

The two leaves are held as one record. Neither carries the other’s text, so the tie is made on the
physical evidence: both are photographs rather than flatbed scans, of the same tanned and curling
paper, and both carry the same beaded rule as a border — on the cover it runs beneath an
art-nouveau floral corner block, and on page 52 it runs down the outer margin beside the page
number. The period agrees and the subject agrees. Page 52 carries no imprint of its own, so a
reader who wants to test the tie should test it there.]
