CYCLES PEUGEOT
BEAULIEU, (DOUBS.)

[Signed at the lower right, above the lettering:]

D’APRÈS
E. VULLIEMIN

[Printed beneath the frame at the lower right:]

IMP. L. REVON & Cie 93, Rue Oberkampf. PARIS

[A cuirassier in a gilt helmet with a long black mane and white epaulettes sits a bay horse beneath bare trees and leans down to take an envelope from an infantryman in a gray-blue tunic, red trousers and a red kepi. The infantryman stands in front of the horse and holds a diamond-frame bicycle by its bars, a leather bag strapped behind the saddle. Fallen leaves lie across the ground and a low line of hills runs behind. The lettering is set in gold on an olive field inside a black frame.

This is the subject of the Lemercier sheet signed by Ernest Vulliemin, which the archive also holds, redrawn rather than reprinted. The soldier now stands in front of the horse and hands his letter up, the horse’s head is turned away to the left and the whole scene has moved into a browner key. The credit says as much in two small words above the name: D’APRÈS, after Vulliemin. The address has changed too, from Valentigney to Beaulieu, the Peugeot works near Valentigney where the bicycles were made, and the printer is Revon in the rue Oberkampf rather than Lemercier.]
