GEFFAC
FRENCH MANUFACTURERS’ EXPORT GROUP OF CYCLE PARTS AND ACCESSORIES

TRON & BERTHET
27360 PONT SAINT PIERRE (EURE)
TÉL. (32) 49 70-11
TÉLEX : TRONBER 180710 F

[A single sheet, printed in red and black on one side, setting out the whole Idéale range on one
page: seventeen models in a grid of twelve cells, each with a drawing, the seat dimensions in
millimeters and, for most, the weight in kilogrammes. It is a range card rather than a catalog, the
kind of thing a maker sends to a buyer who already knows the marque.

What makes it worth holding is the footer. The sheet is issued not by Tron & Berthet alone but
through GEFFAC, described as the French manufacturers’ export group of cycle parts and accessories,
with the maker’s own address and telex beneath. This is the marque selling abroad through a
collective, and it is the only sheet in the archive that shows Idéale doing so.

It also dates itself twice over without printing a year. The address reads 27360 PONT SAINT PIERRE,
a five-figure postcode, and French five-figure postcodes came in during 1972. A telex number is
given. Both put the sheet in the 1970s.

The range has moved a long way from the leather catalogs held here from the 1930s. Vinyl and Skai
appear as finishes in their own right, there is a foam saddle on elastic straps described as a
revolution in comfort and marked nouveauté, and one model is offered in a version for the Solex.
The Tan-Sad Junior child seat is carried as an Idéale product rather than as a bought-in line, which
is how the American catalogs of the same decade also list it.

The second marque on the sheet is NOREX, and it is not spelled the way the earlier sheets spell it.
The men’s and ladies’ road saddles are noted as also made in NOREX quality, and the last cell offers
the No. 130 two ways, dessus cuir as an Idéale and in molded material as a Norex. The c.1936 catalog
and the spare-parts tariff both held here print the name NORTEX throughout. So the name loses its T
somewhere between the 1930s and the 1970s, which is a small thing to be able to date from the paper
rather than from recollection.

The sheet is 455 pixels wide, the smallest thing in the archive. It is held because the test for a
catalog page is whether its words can be read, and every model line, dimension, weight and line of
fine print on it can be.]
