The Brooks catalog for 1933, issued as List No. 168 from the Criterion Works in Great Charles Street, Birmingham. Its title page describes it as “a catalogue of the complete range of models offered for the year 1933 with notes upon the selection and maintenance of such kit,” and that second half of the sentence is what makes the book unusually useful: it is a range list with a maintenance argument running through it.

Three things in it are worth drawing out for anyone reading the Brooks range backward from the modern catalog.

The first is the roll-call on printed page 3, which is the clearest statement the company made of how its own marks were organized. It reads: “Leather seated models—BROOKS: BROOKS CHALLENGE: BROOKS LEGION: KAYDEX; a super weatherproof range—BROOKS PLYFLEX; a popular priced weatherproof range—IMPERVIA; and spring mattress-top type—BROOKS SUPLEX.” Seven marks, sorted by construction rather than by price, and each of them is then carried right through the saddle section with its own models. Challenge and Legion in particular are not incidental mentions. Challenge appears as C.5, C.30, C.31, C.32 and C.39, and Legion as A, B, E, H and J, each illustrated.

The second is the spelling. The range is printed SUPLEX throughout, with one P, on pages 18, 20 and 21.

The third is that this catalog quotes no prices at all. Every model carries its size and its weight, and then a price line set as a blank: “Price: ___ enam.; ___ nic.” for the models offered in both finishes, and “Price: ___ enam.” for those offered in enamel only. The figures were never printed. Anyone using this book to compare what one Brooks range cost against another will not find the answer here, and a price attributed to the 1933 catalog has come from somewhere else. The enamel-and-nickel pairing itself is the useful signal: in 1933 a Brooks saddle is quoted enamelled or nickeled, and chromium appears in the book only once, on the No. 9 toeclip, which is described as “open steel frame, chromium plated.” The cycling shoes on pages 28 and 29 are repeatedly called “fully chromed,” but that is chrome-tanned leather and not a plated finish.

For a reader interested in care rather than models, printed pages 3, 30 and 31 are the ones that matter. Page 3 gives the company’s own instruction for dressing a saddle, and pages 30 and 31 list Brooks Proofide with an illustration of the tin, together with the No. 3 and No. 5 tension pin spanners, the No. 5 being specified “for tension pin and clip nuts of Champion saddles.”

Two notes on what this record is. Printed pages 8 and 9 are not present in the source scan: it runs from the spread carrying pages 6 and 7 straight to the spread carrying pages 10 and 11. Nothing should be treated as absent from the 1933 range on the strength of this book alone, and the military service saddles in particular are unaccounted for by the gap. This record reproduces the cover, the title page, the saddle range and the accessory, motor and closing pages that carry the catalog’s own statements; the bag, oilskin, shoe, pillion and legging pages, printed pages 22 through 29 and 34 through 39, are held in the Ebykr collection but are not reproduced here.

The scan is a low-resolution one. The embedded images run about 1,350 pixels across per two-page spread, which is roughly 675 pixels per printed page, and the images in this record are presented at twice that. Headings, model numbers, sizes and weights read cleanly. The smallest body copy sits at the floor of legibility.

SADDLE SELECTION

THE ADVANTAGES OF CYCLING for recreation and exercise are once again receiving recognition. Thousands are being added to the ranks of those who perceive the health and pleasure to be derived from it. Doctors testify to its contribution to good health, the pleasure it yields needs no demonstration, whilst as a means of seeing the beauties of the countryside, cycling is unrivalled. This renewed enthusiasm for cycling calls for a careful study of the means whereby the most enjoyable and comfortable riding may be obtained.

A bicycle should not be bought at the lowest possible price, heedless of the service which the many components going to make up the whole will be called upon to give. In the eagerness to be out upon the road the first machine that is offered is sometimes accepted. It may happen that the alternatives offered have apparently such slight differences that the beginner is unable to distinguish the one from the other, and cannot see any reason for a decision which might involve an increase in initial expenditure. Of no cycle component is it so important to exercise care in selection as the saddle. A cheap saddle is the first component of a cheap machine to show its weakness.

The seat portion of a saddle is made in various materials and in different forms, according to particular requirements. A leather seat is by far the most appreciated, but there are also weatherproof fabric seats, and others constructed with springs. Knowledge is required in order to recognise leather quality, and the inexpert are easily misled on this point. Inferior grades can quite often be given a high polish and smooth surface, thus presenting an excellent appearance, but in a very short time deterioration occurs, whilst with superior leather exactly the opposite happens and the rich, beautiful, supple material becomes itself a sufficient reason for pride of ownership.

Weatherproof seats of combined fabric and leather construction present essential qualities for riders whose machines have on occasion to be left exposed to the elements. The flexibility and shapeliness of a leather seat are retained, and the “proofed” surface prevents the absorption of moisture.

Spring seats consist of a series of longitudinal springs beneath a felt and weatherproof surface. Resilience is thus obtained in the seat itself, and there are many riders to-day who prefer this arrangement to the usual method of giving elasticity by means of the [s]pring framing.

Reverting to seats constructed of leather, it is difficult to appreciate, from appearance only, the difference between the first grade article and the next best, but in reality the explanation is perfectly simple. For Brooks Saddles only the “Butt” of a hide is employed: this, as will be seen from the illustration, is only the middle portion of the whole hide, and commands a much higher price. It is only by the use of such material, however, that the quality of Brooks Saddles can be maintained, and the experience of many thousands of cyclists confirms the value of this wise precaution. Saddles cut from butts, grease dressed during manufacture, are practically waterproof, yet capable of “breathing” in a healthy manner; this means that a Brooks Saddle never becomes “clammy” and is always cool to the rider, thereby considerably conducing to comfort on a long journey, especially in hot weather. Cheaper saddles cannot afford Brooks quality leather, and it is in the rider’s interest that Brooks Saddles are clearly marked on both flaps and at the rear with the name BROOKS.

The best weatherproof protection for the saddle is the rider, but for those whose cycles are at times at the mercy of the elements there are the patented Plyflex and Impervia models. Plyflex consists of “plies” of fabric, weatherproof surface uppermost, on moulded leather foundation, affording a substantial top that, whilst flexible, will not crack and does not cling to the rider or become unduly warm in use.

For those who prefer resilience in the seat itself, an extensive range of spring mattress-top saddles is listed. Every confidence can be placed in these models, designed and manufactured throughout at Brooks works, and incorporating the accumulated experience of half-a-century of saddle making.

Quite apart from the substance of a saddle there is also the question of under springing and shape. A beginner would be well advised to try various types of saddles before making a decision. This, however, is not always possible, and a few general remarks may be helpful, whilst the more detailed comments on the following pages should also be studied.

The present-day popularity of saddles once described as “racing models” is no doubt due to the degree of efficiency which the saddles afford the rider and to the excellent surface of modern roads.

To-day the range of Brooks-made saddles is extended to meet the needs of all types of riders and pockets. The cyclist will know the models by the following marks:— Leather seated models—BROOKS: BROOKS CHALLENGE: BROOKS LEGION: KAYDEX; a super weatherproof range—BROOKS PLYFLEX; a popular priced weatherproof range—IMPERVIA; and spring mattress-top type—BROOKS SUPLEX.

It is in some of the detail features of the Brooks-made saddle that the cyclist will appreciate superiority, as, for example, the perfect shape of the top, the efficient clip with fine adjustment, and the shapely springs and frame, accurately made in every particular.

To those cyclists who are purchasing standard-built machines we cannot too strongly urge the wisdom of changing a saddle if, after a reasonable period of use, it is found uncomfortable: if a correct choice can be made before actual purchase it would be a less costly procedure. Any agent will assist in this matter.

[Two diagrams. The first, a bicycle in side view, is captioned “SLOPE OF SADDLE INCREASED FOR SPEED WORK” and “PEAK OF SADDLE BROUGHT FORWARD ABOVE CENTRE OF CRANK FOR SPRINTING AND HILL CLIMBING.” The second shows a rider’s leg at the pedal.]

Care should be taken to fit the saddle in the most comfortable position. The measurements given in the accompanying illustration have been found by experience to be a good average. Excessive ele[vation] of seat should be avoided, and the seat should be at such a height from the pedals that the leg is never fully extended.

In common with all leatherware, a leather saddle will repay careful treatment. We recommend Brooks Proofide, which has been specially prepared in our own works as a suitable dressing for conditioning and preserving leather. This dressing should be applied lightly to the surface of the saddle and allowed to dry: on no account should the drying of leather be hastened in any way.

With the acquisition of a bicycle and the enthusiasm that comes with it, there arrives the need for suitable kit. The same care given to the selection of a saddle should be exercised in regard to other accessories. Amongst various considerations we would mention the wisdom of obtaining a holdall of ample size for summer touring, with an alternative bag for day or week-end excursions, bearing in mind the convenience of such an attachment as the Brooks Quick Release device. Ponchos and oilskin clothing should be chosen with care to ensure absolutely waterproof material, not impaired by careless stitching. Shoes of light weight, yet reinforced to withstand the wear peculiar to cycling, are yet another feature calling for very careful buying.

RACING SADDLES AND ROAD SPEED MODELS

At one time these narrow, almost rigid, models were the choice solely of racing cyclists, for use either in track or road events. It is a significant fact that the Brooks Champion is still the recognised favourite for all such events, and is selected by an overwhelming majority of experts. To-day, however, with the increase in efficiency cycling amongst the “multimiler” class of rider, this narrow, well cambered seat, on rigid under frame, enjoys a vastly increased patronage. The Champion shape has been found to assist energetic long-distance riding by offering the minimum resistance to pedalling effort and by giving just that degree of support which is appreciated by the rider who has learned the secret of balance awheel.

BROOKS B.17 CHAMPION MODELS. Brooks solid butt hide top, light yet strong two-wire frame. Gent’s model only, in the three following sizes:

Standard—Size: 11″ × 6¾” × 2⅜”. Weight: 1 lb. 12 ozs. Price: [blank] enam.
Narrow—Size: 11″ × 6″ × 2⅜”. Weight: 1 lb. 11 ozs. Price: [blank] enam.
Sprinter—Size: 11″ × 4⅞” × 2¼”. Weight: 1 lb. 8 ozs. Price: [blank] enam.

BROOKS PATENT CHAMPION DURALUMIN. The association of a duralumin frame with a Brooks solid butt hide top brings to the lightweight enthusiast the most practical solution of the ultra light seat problem. In a saddle of this nature, the importance of a reliable leather top, capable of retaining its shape, cannot be over-estimated. This model resembles the B.17 Champion Narrow, and is strongly recommended for the clubman’s use. Gent’s model only. Size: 11″ × 6″ × 2¼”. Weight: 1 lb. 4 ozs. Price: [blank]

BROOKS CHALLENGE C.32. Similar in shape to the B.17 Champion Narrow. Leather top, two-wire frame. Gent’s model only. Size: 11″ × 6″ × 2⅜”. Weight: 1 lb. 10 ozs. Price: [blank] enam.

BROOKS PLYFLEX P.209. Similar in shape to the B.17 Champion Narrow. With patent weatherproof moulded top, of multi-ply construction. Non-cracking, non-clinging, flexible, and durable. Two-wire frame. Gent’s model. Size: 11″ × 6″ × 2⅜”. Weight: 1 lb. 10 ozs. Price: [blank] enam.

BROOKS PLYFLEX P.209L. Has a slightly shorter top than the P.209, and has a four-wire single loop frame instead of the two-wire pattern. Ladies’ model. Size: 10″ × 6½” × 2″. Weight: 1 lb. 9 ozs. Price: [blank] enam.

KAYDEX K.5. Leather top, two-wire frame. Gent’s model only. Size: 11″ × 6″ × 2⅜”. Weight: 1 lb. 8 ozs.

Saddle heights are measured from centre of clip bolt to seat surface.

RACING AND ROAD SPEED MODELS

The models illustrated on the opposite page are in continuation of the Champion series described on page 14. They offer alternatives for specialised forms of speedy road and track work, and whilst they all embody long, narrow, well-cambered tops, there are variations in the under frames and they should be compared closely with the other Champion models, and also with the road speed models of mattress-top construction appearing on pages 20 and 21.

BROOKS B.19 CHAMPION. A lengthened B.17 Champion, affording a change of seating position for fast, long-distance road riding. Brooks solid butt hide top, extra strong two-wire frame. Gent’s model only. Size: 12½” × 7″ × 3″. Weight: 2 lbs. Price: [blank] enam.

BROOKS B.18 CHAMPION. Brooks solid butt hide top, four-wire single loop frame. Gent’s model only. Size: 11″ × 6¾” × 2⅜”. Weight: 1 lb. 12 ozs. Price: [blank] enam.

BROOKS B.66 CHAMPION. Brooks solid butt hide top, four-wire bracket, short sturdy rear coil springs, pivoted peak. Gent’s model only. Size: 11″ × 6¾” × 3¼”. Weight: 2 lbs. 6 ozs. Price: [blank] enam.

BROOKS B.75 CHAMPION. Brooks solid butt hide top, four-wire bracket, three short stiff coil springs. Gent’s model. Size: 11″ × 6¾” × 3″. Weight: 2 lbs. 7 ozs. Price: [blank] enam.

BROOKS B.75L. CHAMPETTE. (The Ladies’ Champion.) Brooks solid butt hide top, four-wire bracket, three short stiff coil springs. Ladies’ model. Size: 10¾” × 6¾” × 3″. Weight: 2 lbs. 7 ozs. Price: [blank] enam.

BROOKS LEGION E. Leather top, four-wire single loop frame. Gent’s model only. Size: 10¾” × 6¾” × 2″. Weight: 1 lb. 10 ozs. Price: [blank] enam.

KAYDEX K.4. Leather top, four-wire single loop frame. Gent’s model only. Size: 10½” × 6¾” × 2″. Weight: 1 lb. 8 ozs. Price: [blank] enam.
