“AUTOMOTO” HA DEMOSTRADO SER LA MAQUINA FORJADORA DE CAMPEONES

[A folded leaflet issued for the Argentine market, held here as two scans: the outer panels and the
inner spread. It is printed throughout in a single dark blue on cream.

The cover panel is the strongest thing in the archive’s Automoto holdings for reading the marque as
a trademark. The four-leaf clover is set inside a heavy ring, drawn flat and white against solid
blue, with AUTOMOTO reversed out across the leaves and the stem curling into a loop below. Nothing
else is on the panel except UNA MARCA QUE INSPIRA CONFIANZA above, BICICLETAS below, and at the foot
the exclusive distributors, Dartiguelongue y Toulouse of Esmeralda 142, Buenos Aires. The clover
alone is expected to carry the name, which is a thing Automoto’s French paper of the 1900s and 1910s
never quite risked.

Seven machines are described in all. On the outer panels, the A. G. L. 43 is the flagship: a
three-speed gran lujo machine in metallic violet with rod brakes, a rear carrier, a chainguard,
chromed fittings and balloon tires. The A. L. 26 beneath it is a plainer black roadster with rod
brakes and a sprung seat. The inner spread carries five more, arranged around a racing model in the
center: the A. U. 8 and its chromed twin the A. L. 8, both fitted with racing bars, wing nuts and a
flip-flop hub carrying a fixed cog and a freewheel; the A. U. 3 and A. U. 23 touring machines; and
in the middle the A. S. S. 20, the Super-Profesional, on Rubis steel tubing with tubular rims, track
pedals, a double-cog freewheel, an automatic chain oiler and no toolbag or keys, because the sheet
says plainly that this model is meant for racers.

Two lines run the length of the inner spread, top and bottom, and between them they are the whole
sales argument. Buying an Automoto is the best investment of your money, and Automoto has proved to
be the machine that forges champions.

The leaflet prints no date. The Art Deco lettering, the metallic and chromed finishes offered as
upgrades on nearly every model, and the balloon tires place it in the 1930s, and it is filed to that
decade here. It could run a little later. The frame sizes are given in centimeters and the wheels in
inches, which is exactly what a French machine sold through a British-influenced South American
trade would do.]
