les hôpitaux : franchise complète jusqu’à 20 grammes.

Ordinaires, 0.20 ; avec réponse payée, 0.40 ; illustrées avec ou sans correspondance, 0.10. La
correspondance ne doit occuper au recto que la moitié du côté réservé à l’adresse. Toute addition
manuscrite au verso entraîne la taxe de 0.20.

Poids 1 gr. 1/2 à 5 grammes. Dimensions : 7 à 9×10 à 14 c/m.

RECOMMANDÉS

Taxe ordinaire applicable à l’objet plus : pour lettre. paquets clos, papier d’affaires. cartes
postales affranchies à 0.20, droit fixe, 0.35 ; pour échantillons, imprimés. journaux droit fixe,
0.25 ; Poids et dimensions, mêmes que pour les non-recommandés. Avis de réception, 0.25.
Indemnités en cas de perte d’une lettre ou d’une carte (affranchie à 0.20), 0.25 ; d’un autre
objet, 0.10. Sauf le cas de force majeure.

DÉFAUT D’AFFRANCHISSEMENT

Les envois non affranchis paient taxe double à l’arrivée, Les envois insuffisamment affranchis
paient le double du manquant. Les factures, relevés, note d’honoraires non acquittés et tous
objets circulant à tarif réduit seront frappés lorsqu’ils porteront des mots, notes, chiffres
autres que ceux autorisés, d’une surtaxe de 1 fr. en sus de la taxe afférente à l’insuffisance de
l’affranchissement.

INTERDICTION

Les billets de banque, les bons de poste, sans nom de bénéficiaire et, en général, tous titres
payables au porteur, ne peuvent circuler que sous pli recommandé ou chargé.

portant indication exacte des poids brut et net, la nature de la marchandise et sa valeur. Les
colis encombrants dépassant 1 m. 50 ne sont pas admis pour tous pays ou ne le sont que soumis à
une taxe additionnelle égale à 50 0/0 de la taxe ordinaire.

[A shop card rather than a pictorial poster, and one built to earn its place on an agent’s wall.
The upper half is a four-leaf clover in lavender and orange — Automoto’s own device — with nine
racing men’s photographs set into it as circular portraits and the words NOS COUREURS in the
middle where the leaves meet. Four small roundels occupy the corners of the border, each one an
engraving of something else the agent could sell: a treadle sewing machine at each of the top
corners, a cream separator at the lower left, a shotgun and a bottle at the lower right, labeled
NOS MACHINES À COUDRE, NOS ÉCRÉMEUSES and NOS FUSILS.

The lower half is the reason the card was kept. Two panels of small type set out the French
postal tariff in full: letters and closed packets by weight from twenty grammes to a kilogram and
a half, military franking, postcards, registration, the penalties for underpaid postage, the ban
on sending banknotes and bearer paper except under registered cover, and parcel rates for Paris
and for continental France, station or door, with cash-on-delivery and declared-value rates
alongside. A shopkeeper who wanted to know what it cost to post a wheel to a customer looked at
this card, and while he looked he was reading the name of the marque and the names of its racing
men.

The copy at the foot puts the business plainly. Whoever wants an irreproachable bicycle, a
precision firearm, a sewing machine or a cream separator should apply to the Automoto agent, or
write to 152 avenue Malakoff in Paris and ask for the catalog. Automoto had grown out of a
general engineering trade at Saint-Étienne and had not yet stopped selling it.

The sheet prints no date. What dates it is the roster. Barthélemy, Jacquinot, Heusghem, Joordens,
Lenaers and Morenhout are professionals of the years just after the First World War, which places
the card in the early 1920s, and the postal clause for troops on operations outside France
belongs to the same period. That reasoning is the basis for the year recorded here, and it is an
estimate rather than a printed date.
