[An opened Automoto catalog at pages 10 and 11, each page carrying one model in line engraving above
its price and its specification. The two machines are the argument of the whole book set side by
side.

On the left the Touriste 3 Vitesses, a black roadster with red lining, half-nickeled rims, full
mudguards, a sprung touring saddle, a saddlebag and an English handlebar with two rim brakes. Its
gearing is a three-speed Edco rear hub, and at 300 francs it is the more expensive of the pair.

On the right the Tour de France, fifty francs cheaper and stripped: wood rims for glued tubulars, a
single fixed cog on an Automoto hub, no brakes drawn at all, a slightly sloping top tube, a racing
saddle and horn grips. Its enamel is not black but the marque’s own Violine, the color that recurs
through Automoto catalogs and advertisements for the next twenty years.

The Tour de France name is doing exactly what it did in every French catalog of the period. Automoto
sold the racing name at the bottom of the price list, not the top, and the tourist who wanted three
speeds and mudguards paid the premium.
