[The front cover, printed in gold, orange, red and black, with the Schwinn Paramount roundel overlapping the Schwinn Superior roundel above the script title “Light weight” and the word “BICYCLES”, and an orange band naming Arnold, Schwinn & Company of Chicago. The Paramount roundel has a four-pointed star at its center and the Superior roundel a red A S monogram on a gray disk; a black strip runs along the foot. No stamp, sticker or handwriting is visible; a vertical crease runs the full height of the cover near its middle, cracking the ink in the roundel and the dark bands.]

What the six day bike riders say

March 12, 1938

Arnold, Schwinn & Co.
1718 N. Kildare Ave.
Chicago, Illinois

Gentlemen:

I have been having Oscar Wastyn build my racing bicycles and they have been very good, but I think the parts and fittings you are making will be better than the imported ones I have been using, especially the racing hubs with the threadless cones.

Mr. Wastyn has my specifications and I want these bicycles as soon as possible. In the meantime, I would like to get two sets of racing hubs to use on my old bicycles.

I am certainly glad an American manufacturer is building a good racing bicycle and that I can get parts in a hurry if necessary.

Gentlemen:

We have hoped for a long time that some American manufacturer would build a racing bicycle that we could use. When we rode in England and Europe a year ago, it was very humiliating for an American team to be obliged to ride foreign made bicycles; and believe us, we were kidded plenty about it.

We have ridden your new lightweights and have gone through the various parts with a fine tooth comb and are satisfied that you have the best bicycle that can be bought anywhere. We were particularly impressed with the thoroughness and care you are using even to the smallest detail.

The fact that Emil Wastyn is with you is enough guarantee for us that the bicycles are right.

We have placed our order for six Paramount Racers and equipment and want delivery just as soon as possible. We would like to ride them in our next race.

Yours very truly,

Gentlemen:

We are sailing from New York next week to ride in the Six-Day race in London which starts May 1st. If it is possible, we would like your bicycles to ride in this race as we will be riding as the American team and we would like to prove that America is building just as good bicycles as they build in England.

If the bicycles can’t be ready in time, we would like to get several sets of wheels as our old equipment is in bad shape. We want the new Schwinn wood rims and the large flange racing hubs.

Will be in to see you the first of the week.

Gentlemen:

I am shipping my old bicycles to you today from Milwaukee. I want three Paramount Racers and will give Mr. Wastyn my specifications when I come in, which will be in a few days.

After visiting your factory a few weeks ago, and going over your bicycles carefully, I am sure they will be just what I want.

I want these bicycles just as soon as possible.

Will see you soon.

Gentlemen:

I want to thank you for the attention you gave me when I went through your factory several weeks ago. I learned a lot about bicycle construction and don’t see where you could make any improvements.

The racing model is fine and I also liked the Sports-Touring models very much and believe you will sell a lot of them when people hear about them.

I am riding in the Pittsburgh race with Cecil Yates. This is the last race this Spring but next Fall I want to ride your bicycles.

Will see you the next time I am in Chicago.

Yours,

Att: Mr. Crawford:

I don’t know what my plans will be for this summer, but I expect to keep in training and I want to get one of your racers to train on as soon as possible. You may equip this bicycle with road tires and rim brake.

When the Six-Day racing season opens next Fall, I will want another bicycle as I expect to ride Schwinn bicycles exclusively.

Ship the bicycle to me at Kenosha.

The letters overlap one another and the telegram, so parts of the telegram form are covered within the printed montage. The letters are signed Cecil Yates (with his typed name), Al Crossley and Jimmy Walthour Jr (above the typed “Walthour & Crossley, The American Team”), Jerry Rodman and Henry “Cocky” O’Brien, a Harold Mc… whose surname is not clearly legible, Freddie Ottevaere as the signature appears to read and Bobby Thomas; the telegram is signed Jackie Sheehan of the Six-Day Bike Race at Pittsburgh.]

SCHWINN LARGE FLANGE HUBS
Continental Racing Type
Standard Equipment on all Paramount Models

THESE HUBS embody all that is desirable in foreign design, plus the new Schwinn threadless cone—a radical departure from standard practice without which perfect concentricity and alignment cannot be attained. The shells, axles and cones are machine turned from the finest magnetically tested manganese steels, a steel especially developed for fine case hardened parts. Axles, cones, hub and hub ball paths are precision ground—a feature rarely found in the finest foreign hubs. Adjustment of bearings is effected by nuts and lock nuts, bench adjusted and fixed. The flanges are made of the finest heat treated, drop forged Schwinn Dural. These hubs are very light and superior to any in the world.

WHY THREADLESS CONES ARE BETTER
When threaded cones are used, the necessary thread tolerance and the condition of the thread make perfect concentricity and alignment impossible. With the Schwinn threadless cones this defect is eliminated.

The cones, which are perfectly ground, are suction fitted to the precision ground axle and are, therefore, in perfect alignment with each other, and the cone ball paths are perfectly concentric with the axle. The ball paths in the hub shells are internally ground after hardening and, therefore, perfectly true and round. Ball path form follows best high grade ball bearing practices. These hubs are the most perfect and free-running ever produced.

The Paramount front hub is identical in design with the rear hub so far as bearing construction is concerned. The forged, heat treated Schwinn Dural flanges cover the ball races and eliminate dust washers.

Fixed rear sprocket 1″ or ½” pitch or standard foreign Free-Wheel sprocket ½” pitch available. Foreign sprockets will fit Paramount hub.

Retail Price: Front Hub, Complete | $4.50 | Part No. 4120

SCHWINN-WEBB “TEN-SPOT” RIM BRAKES
Front and Rear Application

SCHWINN BUILT
By special arrangement with the H. C. Webb Company, Ltd., of Birmingham, England, we secured the exclusive rights to manufacture the Webb 10-Spot Rim Brake in the United States. We adopted this brake because of its many points of superiority.

THE “TEN HIGH SPOTS”
1. Light but immensely strong and balanced, fully compensated arch, insuring even wear on each block.
2. Brake shoes fitted with instantly adjustable draw bolts.
3. Instant and independent adjustment by knurled hand adjusters. Adjustment ean be made while riding.
4. Hinged clip fitting fixed in a jiffy.
5. Easy cable length adjustment.
6. Rust proofed springs adjustable to any tension.
7. Applicable on Schwinn Superior rim, Schwinn wood racing rim and all Endrick type rims.
8. Lever adjustable for straight or curved section of handlebar, eliminating cable breakage.
9. Special aluminum finish, waterproof cable housing.
10. Double roller nipples at both ends of cable.

THIS BRAKE is suitable for 26″ or 28″ wheels—light and sensitive in action, yet absolutely rigid by virtue of the method of anchorage applied—hinged clips holding it firmly to the fork.

The Schwinn-Webb rim brake is ideal for all purposes. Everyday use, touring or training. Quickly attached for road work and quickly removed for racing. Its light weight gives it the call over other types of brakes where local laws require brake equipment on all bicycles.

Retail Price: Complete, Rear | 2.70, Part No. 4650
