[One leaf, page 4, from a Raleigh catalog, printed in black and red on cream. A vignette runs
across the head of the page in red and blue: a line of uniformed men with bicycles drawn up in the
street, one of them carrying a flag, with a rider passing in front of them.
Below it the Gent’s Model Superbe is drawn in profile, a black roadster with a full chaincase, a
sprung leather saddle, a saddlebag on the nose, a bell on the bar and a dynamo lamp at the fork
crown, and the specification is set beside it in a single narrow column.
The specification is worth reading for what it takes as standard. A Sturmey-Archer three-speed and
a Raleigh patent detachable oilbath gearcase are both in the list rather than in the extras, and so
is the electric lamp. The rims are Roman aluminium, the chain is a Coventry Elite and the saddle a
Brooks Suplex. The finish is green enamel lined in twenty-two carat gold leaf, with black or
all-black available at no extra charge and Raleigh-Chrome plating likewise free if asked for at the
time of ordering. A Lady’s Model Superbe was the same price.
The price is set in a red box at the foot: fifteen pounds net cash, or twelve monthly payments of
one pound eight shillings, which is sixteen pounds sixteen shillings over the year. The hire
purchase premium is twelve percent.
The heron badge is drawn just above the price panel with THE RALEIGH lettered around it.
The page prints no year. The Superbe model post-dates the Raleigh catalog of 1938, and the
equipment and the price point to about 1950.]
