THE ALL-STEEL RALEIGH in the making
INDIVIDUALITY
We believe this catalogue will be especially interesting, for not only does it contain details of the finest and most comprehensive range of bicycles ever offered to the public, but it demonstrates, without the slightest doubt, how very carefully and thoroughly they are made. The Raleigh Cycle Factory is to-day beyond question by far the largest, most modern, and best equipped cycle factory in the world.
Possibly, we could make no greater claim than the plain assertion that our constantly improved methods of production, which alone have enabled us to meet the present-day demand for very large numbers of Raleigh bicycles at competitive prices, have ensured a standard of excellence which compares more than favourably even with that for which the early Raleigh machines were justly famed.
It was upon the quality of such machines that the great Raleigh business was founded 50 years ago, and we have no hesitation in stating that the latest Raleighs are better in every way, although cheaper beyond comparison.
From the very beginning there has existed always a predominant note of leadership and quality: leadership in the design and development of unique features: quality in both the materials used and the craftsmanship with which the machines are made.
For example, The Raleigh Cycle Company have, for some time, been the only manufacturers to fit chromium-plated spokes throughout their entire range, the most serviceable finish hitherto available. For the coming season they are going yet another step forward in introducing for the first time in the history of the bicycle, the unbreakable stainless steel spoke, covered by Raleigh Patent. This spoke is for all time rustless, in fact, the longer it is in use and the more it is cleaned, the brighter it becomes.
Every Raleigh bicycle is designed and produced with one ideal in mind—to give the greatest measure of
[Two factory photographs: a row of massive automatic machines in the Automatic Shop with an operator at the nearest one, and two men lifting frames and forks in and out of the tiled plating vats.]

— Page 7 —
PERFECT CRAFTSMANSHIP
value in ease of running, reliability and long life. Nothing is spared, either in the quest for materials of the finest quality or in the use of the most modern methods and machinery. In the Automatic Shop, for instance, illustrated here, these massive, fully automatic, high-precision machines have been installed at great cost in order to produce work of the highest possible accuracy and quality. Practically every component part is turned out in our new up-to-date factory, individually produced under the strictest supervision.
The perfect preparation of all parts before enamelling or chromium plating is largely responsible for the marked superiority of Raleigh finish, and the attention paid to every detail has resulted in a standard of perfection by which all cycles are judged.
As you look through the pages of this book, you will notice illustrations of the more important Raleigh features. These, together with the descriptive notes, will give you an excellent idea of the extreme care and attention to detail with which the Raleigh bicycle is built, and indeed, justify our claim to “individual” production. There is a Raleigh dealer in every town who will be happy to show you these new 1938 models.
STURMEY-ARCHER PATENT DYNOLAMP
6 VOLT 4·5 WATT
The Sturmey-Archer Dynolamp is unique. In one solidly cast housing is contained the high output dynamo, duo-parabolic reflector, battery for pilot light, switch mechanism and drive. There are no external wires. A special feature is the duo-parabolic reflector which gives a broad beam for immediate lighting and the powerful centre beam which is effective over a very long range.
The Sturmey-Archer Patent Dynolamp is utterly trouble free. It sets a higher standard of efficiency in dynamo lighting for bicycles, and its dignified appearance gives a new sense of pride to ownership. Available as original equipment of new machines, 17/6 extra.
[A band of three factory photographs runs across the page: the enamelling plant, the wheel-building shop with two men lacing wheels at a conveyor, and finished machines being loaded into a RALEIGH delivery van. A cutaway drawing of the Dynolamp mounted on a fork blade sits at lower right.]

STURMEY ARCHER
HUB GEARS AND HUB BRAKES
WE RECOMMEND Sturmey-Archer Hub Gears and Hub Brakes as fitments to our machines. Neat, light and unsurpassed for reliability, the variable gears ensure the utmost comfort and ease under all riding conditions, and to cyclists using these hubs, the bogy of hill climbing and head winds is reduced to an absolute minimum. Mechanical tests have proved indisputably that there is no other gear to compare in all-round efficiency with these totally enclosed oil-bathed hubs.
The internal expanding brakes are delightfully smooth, extremely effective in operation, and tremendously powerful without the slightest semblance of harshness under the most exacting conditions. A pleasing feature is that they entirely eliminate disfigurement of the wheel-rim.
The prices quoted are for Hubs fitted as an extra to a new machine.

The “For-Ever” GUARANTEE
OUR Guarantee is unique. From the 1st of January, 1907, Raleighs are guaranteed by us against defects of manufacture WITHOUT ANY TIME LIMIT; no matter when such defect shows itself, we replace the defective part gratis. This guarantee is subject to the conditions specified below.
CONDITIONS OF GUARANTEE
With all machines and component parts herein specified we give a special guarantee instead of the guarantee implied by statute or otherwise as to the quality or fitness for the purpose of cycling of goods supplied by us, any such implied guarantee being in all cases excluded. In cases of machines which have been used for “hiring-out” purposes, or in respect of which our trade mark or manufacturing number has been removed, no guarantee of any kind is given or is to be implied.
We guarantee, subject to the conditions mentioned below, that all precautions which are usual and reasonable have been taken by us to secure excellence of materials and workmanship, but damage for which we make ourselves responsible under this guarantee is limited to the free supply of a new part in exchange for the part of the bicycle which may have proved defective, and does not include the cost of fitting.
This guarantee does not include tyres,* rims, chains, saddles, variable gears, coaster hubs, etc., in respect of which we give the guarantee furnished by the makers, usually twelve months. And the purchaser shall not be entitled to claim any damage whatever, save replacement of the defective parts. THIS GUARANTEE DOES NOT APPLY TO DEFECTS CAUSED BY WEAR AND TEAR, MISUSE OR NEGLECT.
If a defective part should be found in any of our machines it must be sent to us carriage paid, accompanied by an intimation from the sender that he desires to have it repaired free of charge under our guarantee, and he must also furnish us at the same time with the number of the machine, the name of the dealer from whom he purchased, and the date of purchase.
Failing compliance with the above, no notice will be taken of anything which may arrive, but such articles will lie here at the risk of the sender, and this guarantee and any implied guarantee shall not be enforceable. We guarantee only new machines which are bought either direct from us or from one of our duly authorised dealers, and under no other conditions.
*TYRE GUARANTEE. Dunlop, Fort Dunlop and Dunlop Sprite tyres carry a no-limit guarantee. Those failing by reason of bad workmanship or defective material will be replaced or repaired at a charge proportionate to the wear they have given.
TERMS OF BUSINESS

Non-delivery of the whole of a consignment, or of any separate package forming part of a consignment, should be advised to us within eight days of despatch.
We do not accept responsibility for any loss or damage during transit unless these regulations are complied with.
REPAIRS AND SUNDRIES. Every Raleigh dealer realises the importance of making adequate provision for the purpose of maintaining in constant service all Raleigh bicycles in his territory. He has available competent mechanics, adequate facilities for repairs, also a good stock of spares; therefore in all questions of maintenance, Raleigh riders should approach the local Raleigh dealer. We should be advised if any difficulty arises. This subject is treated comprehensively in our Repairs and Sundries Catalogue.
