head M. et B. — PARIS across the top. Mestre et Blagé were Paris wholesalers to the cycle trade,
and this is a page of a jobber’s book rather than a maker’s own catalog: it sells one named marque
alongside a great deal of anonymous hardware.

The panel that matters here is the first one. GARDE-BOUE ” LEFOL ” (Breveté S.G.D.G.) is drawn as a
complete rear half of a bicycle, hammered mudguard and platform rack together, and offered in three
grades at three prices. Fifty-two francs the pair buys the racing hammered guard with neither
platform nor rear light. Fifty-eight buys the half-balloon on steel stays. Eighty-six buys the
version with the platform, duralumin stays and clamp rings.

That is the whole Lefol proposition in three lines, priced by a third party rather than by the
maker, which is what makes a wholesaler’s page worth keeping. The spread from the plainest to the
best-equipped guard is 65 percent, and the extra is bought almost entirely with the platform rack
and the switch from steel to duralumin.

The rest of the page is the ordinary trade: rubber and leatherette mudflaps, canvas-and-leather
mudflaps with skirts, enameled and cadmium-plated stays plain, threaded and forged, flat ribbed
stays, and eight small nickeled brackets and bridges priced individually from forty centimes. A
boxed note reminds the dealer to state two things with every order, the wheel size, 650 or 700, and
whether the mudguard is corrugated or ribbed.

The page prints no year. The Ebykr archive files the Mestre et Blagé catalog to 1939, and the three
Lefol prices printed here, 52 and 86 francs at the extremes, are the pair quoted in the Ebykr
article on J. Lefol for that year.]
