NOTE:—These instruments and their drives are designed for use on pedal cycles only. They should NOT be fitted to Autocycles, Lightweight Motorcycles or Motorcycles.
The Smiths speedometer head is mounted on the handlebar by a neat bracket, light in weight but exceptionally strong.
No alterations to the front wheel fixing are involved. The driving gear is fixed to the front wheel spokes by a simple attachment, the pinion bracket secured by the normal spindle nut.
Precise knowledge of your speed and the distance you have covered adds immensely to the pleasure of cycling. Whether you are pottering or long-distance touring, a Smiths Cycle Speedometer on your machine faithfully records every mile you cover and indicates your speed at a glance.
You will find it most interesting to compare distances over various routes, invaluable on the club run or when riding to schedule . . . and most useful too, in judging your performance with different gear ratios or after other modifications.
Made by Smiths, world famous for speedometers, this instrument was designed especially for keen cyclists. Light in weight, it has a 2⅛” dia., dial with chrome-plated rim, the case and fittings being finished with hard-wearing black enamel. Fitting is simplicity itself, and the mechanism is reliable and trouble-free. Fully guaranteed for six months, it is backed by the Smiths reputation for accuracy and reliability plus complete service facilities at home and overseas.
£1 15s. 0d.
Complete with driving gear, bracket, flexible drive, and mounting clip.
Distance recorder adds to 10,000 and returns to zero. Speedometer calibrated to 40 miles per hour or 60 kilometres per hour.

for CYCLISTS
WHEN ORDERING YOUR SMITHS SPEEDOMETER
Remember that all bicycles are not alike and to ensure that your cycle speedometer will be easy to fit and the installation neat in appearance, correct particulars should be given with your order.
CALIBRATION. State whether dial markings are required in miles or kilometres.
WHEEL SIZE. Various driving gears are supplied in accordance with the front wheel tyre size, i.e.: 30-Tooth for 28 in. tyres, 28-Tooth for 26 in. tyres, 26-Tooth for 24 in. tyres. Always state the size of the front tyre with your order.
MOUNTING DETAILS. The standard speedometer is designed for clockwise rotation with the driving gear and pinion bracket on the right-hand side as seen from the saddle. Where a brake drum or dynamo hub is fitted on the right an anti-clockwise instrument is supplied together with a left-hand pinion bracket.
Most bicycles have a register for the location of the front spindle on the inside of the fork; the pinion bracket is then fixed between the spindle nut and the fork as shown by diagram A below and it is frequently necessary to insert a special packing washer as indicated to provide sufficient clearance between the driving gear and the fork. When the register is on the outside of the fork end the bracket should be fitted inside the fork and packing washers used if necessary to obtain the correct driving gear clearance (See diagram B).
Please specify whether right or left-hand mounting is required and if packing washers are needed.
DRIVING GEAR FIXING. For tandems having large hub flanges the standard driving gear may be used but special clamp plates and fixing nuts are required as shown in diagram C. The plates are supplied without extra charge when ordered with the speedometer.
LENGTH OF FLEXIBLE DRIVE. Always specify the length of flexible drive required. As a guide, the average lengths are as follows:—Roadster with 28″ wheels and raised bars; 26″ drive. Light roadster or sports model with 26″ wheels; 23″ drive. Light roadster with straight frame and 26″ wheels: 25″ drive. Racing model, with 26″ wheels and dropped bars; 21″ drive.
When measuring the length of drive required, remember to allow for curvature of the cable so that it can be clipped to the fork.
Where the register for wheel location is inside the fork the pinion bracket fixing is between the nut and fork, special packing washers being used to increase the distance at X to provide clearance for the driving gear, if necessary.
DIAGRAM “A”
The pinion bracket is fitted inside the fork end when the spindle register is provided by the nut. Plain packing washers are employed to obtain clearance if required.
DIAGRAM “B”
For tandems with large hub flange the driving gear is secured with four special clamping plates to bridge the openings.

[Right-hand inside page of the Smiths speedometer leaflet, finishing the headline “A lightweight, accurate and reliable speedometer and mileage recorder for cyclists” and giving ordering notes on calibration, wheel size, mounting and flexible drive length. Three white-on-blue section drawings labeled Diagram A, B and C show the pinion bracket and driving gear fixed at a front wheel spindle. A fold line crosses the page, and the left edge is cut off.]
