Lightweight Cycles
Built to an Ideal
[The front cover of the Saxon Lightweight Cycles catalog: a man and a woman with two touring bicycles loaded with saddlebags and panniers stand in a hilly landscape beside a signpost lettered 1939, and below a diagonal band a workman fits the rear wheel of a tandem held on a stand in a workshop. The Saxon name sits in a blue panel between two swords, and a blue band runs down the left edge. A later brownish pencil stroke shaped like a V or a check mark, with no letters or figures, is drawn on the blue band below the middle of the left edge, and that edge shows creases and small cracks in the printed surface.]

SAXON USERS
Dudley, Staffs
8/3/38.
Dear Sirs,
My brother and I have recently purchased one each of your machines with the new Twin Tube Frame, and feel obliged to let you know how completely satisfied we both are. The outstanding liveliness of the “scientifically obtained” short wheel base, together with the retention of a comfortable riding position, and the meticulous workmanship synonymous with the name SAXON, result in a bicycle years ahead of anything I have ever known.
Many thanks for making my rides longer, faster and even more effortless than on previous Saxons.
Yours sincerely,
Port Elizabeth,
South Africa.
12/6/38.
Dear Sirs,
Just a few lines to tell you again how pleased I am with my Saxon. On Tuesday, 31st May, a team of athletes went to Youngsville to compete in a sports meeting . . .
In the One Mile I was scratch and I won the race. In the Two Mile I was also scratch . . . I also won this race. In the Half Mile the limit man had 100 yards and I was again scratch, and he only beat me home by half a wheel . . .
If I had not had a Saxon I fail to see how I could have managed this. When better, faster, stronger and lighter bikes are built, Saxon will build them.
Southport.
10/6/38.
Sirs,
I have had my Saxon-Bailey now for a year or two, and have just had it re-enamelled, and I would like you to send me a full set of transfers for same, as I would like other people to know what make of machine it is.
I can honestly say that it is the most responsive machine I have ever ridden and has given me many hours of enjoyment—and I may say speed—and is good for many, very many, more miles to come.
Hayes, Middlesex.
19/2/38.
Dear Sir,
Received your letter to-night . . . I hope the firm is now building the “Wings of the Wind” Tandem order which my dealer has sent to you. I should like to say that I had one of your “Club” model lightweights three years ago and can honestly say that it is the finest cycle that I have ever put a leg across, and I have every confidence that the tandem will be of the same quality.
Glasgow.
22/4/38.
Dear Sirs,
I am using one of your T.T. Road Race machines at present, and I must say in all fairness that it is in a class by itself . . .
I took it over some of the roughest country in the vicinity of Glasgow, and I was more than surprised by the machine’s liveliness. Then I gave it a test over some fast roads, and again it came up to scratch.
I certainly must hand it to you for such a wonderful machine.
Doncaster.
19/8/38.
Dear Sir,
I purchased a Bailey Path Frame from you . . . about five years ago. This has been recently renovated and done up, and is still winning prizes on the track—£45 last year, £15 this year. Will you please forward me by return transfers for head and seat tube.
Pontypridd, Glam.
2/8/38.
Dear Sir,
I received cycle last Saturday; much obliged. Biggest improvement in frame design in years. Very fast and lively; no hill-drag. The machine is a source of great interest to every clubman who happens to spot it. Their comment—”Nice job,” which I whole-heartedly endorse after riding it.
Croydon.
21/7/38.
Dear Sirs,
I feel I must write and inform you that I am very pleased with the design and workmanship with which my order for a De Luxe model has been executed. I am more than pleased with the performance of the machine, and certainly surprised at its smooth running and lightness.

[The inside front cover of the Saxon catalog, with the contents list in two columns above eight letters headed From Satisfied Saxon Users and a boxed company address at the foot. The letters come from riders in Dudley, Port Elizabeth, Southport, Hayes, Glasgow, Doncaster, Pontypridd and Croydon and praise the Twin Tube frame, the Saxon-Bailey, the T.T. Road Race and De Luxe models and a Bailey Path frame. A pale patch where the paper surface has lifted takes the last letters of “Model” in the Light Roadster entry of the contents; it lies opposite a white patch on the photograph of the facing Foreword page, so the two pages appear to have stuck together there.]

Foreword
EVEN as recently as perhaps 10 years ago, the briefest glance at an illustration of a Saxon cycle was sufficient to convey to the reader the vast difference between Saxon Lightweight cycles and the productions of other firms. Nowadays so many manufacturers are, without any justification at all, describing their machines as “hand-built” and “individually built,” that it becomes increasingly difficult for us to describe and illustrate the great difference and advance which is exemplified in the construction and design of Saxon cycles as compared with the products of those firms employing mass-production methods.
A perusal of the following pages will enable you to appreciate to some extent the modern design and craftsmanship which is put into Saxon cycles and that they are definitely “different.” In order to realise fully the value of our productions, we would urge you to endeavour to see the Saxon models which our various dealers throughout the country will have in stock, and to endeavour to obtain the advice and opinion of some friend who has had the opportunity of riding a Saxon Lightweight cycle.
We would like to stress some of the features of which we have been pioneers in the Industry, such as the introduction of Tecalemit Oiling for cycles; Saxon Oil-Bath Bottom Bracket; the Saxon Cone-Locking Device, awarded the C.T.C. Plaque in 1929; Saxon Short Base Twin Seat Tube Frames for solos and tandems, etc., etc.; the Saxon Resilient Front Forks, acclaimed the greatest advance in cycle design or construction which has taken place in the last 25 years. Since the introduction of these forks by us, there is scarcely a manufacturer who does not describe his forks as “Resilient.”
In perusing the following pages you will find many new models which we have introduced for the 1939 season. We would particularly draw your attention to the new Super Path model, a machine for the racing enthusiast which weighs only 17 lbs. 10 ozs. and which we are confident will maintain our position as The Premier Lightweight Manufacturers of the day.

[The Foreword page, headed by a photograph of workmen at benches in a workshop working on bicycle frames, with the Foreword text below. A white patch on the photograph at the waist of the nearest workman, where the printed surface has lifted, lies opposite a matching patch on the contents list of the facing inside front cover: the two pages appear to have stuck together there.]

USEFULNESS-
THE NEW TWIN-TUBE SHORT BASE FRAME
Registered Design No. 815768
This new Twin Tube Frame represents one of the greatest advances in cycle design in recent years. It allows for the unusually short wheelbases of 38 in. for solo machines and 59 in. for Tandems, without cramping the position of the rider or affecting the balance or steering of the machine.
As you will see from the two photographs, the usual single seat tube is replaced by TWO parallel tubes. The rear wheel is moved up so that it runs between these two tubes thereby saving as much as 3½ in. on the wheelbase of a solo machine.
This frame is based on really sound Engineering principles and has proved its worth on road and track. It was included in our programme for the first time in 1936-37, on the “Wings of the Wind” Tandem. One of the leading cycling journals wrote of this model: “It represents a great advance in Tandem frame design. Probably nothing just as unusual on” twicer “frames has been put on the market in the last ten years.”
Encouraged by its success Saxon Designers have adapted this frame for solo machines. Four models include it in their specifications — the Twin Tube model (Page 12), the T.T. Road Race model, (page 13), the Twin Tube Path model (Page 10), and the Paramount model (Page 15).

THE SAXON CONE-LOCKING DEVICE
Winner of the C.T.C. Plaque
One of the simplest yet most efficient labour-saving devices ever invented for the benefit of the Cyclist. It permits of the finest adjustment of bearings and banishes cone trouble for ever.
As will be readily understood from the diagram, the finest adjustment is possible with these cones. A novice can adjust by hand to within 1 /650th part of an inch, which is not possible with any other type of hub on the market. If properly adjusted you will experience no further trouble with moving cones or pitted cups and cones.

B
A
A SPINDLE.
B Adjustable cone with serrations on the face.
C Serrated washer. This slides along the two flats on the spindle and its teeth or serrations engage in the corresponding serrations on the cone.
D Nut which screws along spindle and engages up against “C,” so that neither “C” nor “D” can under any circumstances move one way or the other.
THE SAXON OIL-BATH
BOTTOM BRACKET
A simple yet unique invention. An aluminium sleeve is inserted in the bottom bracket, completely sealing axle and bearings: in this a Tecalemit nipple is fitted, so that when the cylinder is packed with grease or oil, the bearings and axles are continuously running in an oil bath.
THE WORLD FAMOUS “SAXON”
RESILIENT FRONT FORKS
These Forks were introduced by Saxon in 1929 and were the first Resilient Front Forks ever made. Most other firms now fit “Resilient” forks, but those made by Saxon remain supreme. They have just the right amount of resilience, plus immense rigidity and strength.
All Saxon models, with the exception of the Path models, are fitted with these Forks. They add immeasurably to the pleasure of cycling, absorbing all shock and making rough roads smooth. They are ONE REASON why Saxon Cycles are such a joy to ride.

“T.T. ROAD RACE” MODEL
In 1938, so many victories were gained on standard T.T. machines, that we have, this year, decided to feature a special T.T. Road Race model, which will still further aid the chances of T.T. riders. This machine weighs under 23¾lbs., and is completely equipped with mudguards, brake, etc. This weight has not been achieved by the use of ultra-light gauge tubing, as this is a bad policy which can result only in a whippy, unsafe bicycle. Careful design and the use of proved alloy fittings, constitute the line upon which we have proceeded.

Repairs
CONDITIONS :—We give below prices for some of the more usual repairs. It will be appreciated that it is impossible to enumerate every type of repair that we may be called upon to execute, but we are always pleased to quote for any job you may require. Please note that all cycles or parts sent to us for repair, whether under guarantee or not, must be sent carriage paid, and no goods will be accepted by us unless this condition is complied with. All goods, whether accompanied by a covering letter or not, must be labelled with the owner’s name and address. Failure to do this involves us in a great deal of trouble, and leads to complications and delays.
If repairs are required to any part of a cycle, it is recommended that only the part concerned be sent to us, and not the whole bicycle, as this saves carriage and labour charges. It will be noticed that, in front fork repairs, we quote only for new headstems. We definitely do not recommend that new fork blades be fitted under any circumstances, as we consider that such vital parts as the front fork blades should be tampered with as little as possible.
