[A beach under a palm tree. At the right a lion sits up on its haunches with its eyes shut and its mouth open in a broad grin, forepaws resting on the handlebars of a black Raleigh roadster with a full chaincase, a lamp bracket and a rear carrier. At the left a young man in a red shirt and green shorts lies back against the palm trunk with his hands behind his head and a fishing rod propped in the sand beside him, the sea and a low headland behind. Pinned at the upper left, as a picture within the picture, is the earlier Raleigh poster of a cyclist outrunning a charging lion — the same design this archive holds as a separate sheet. The heron badge sits at the upper right. RALEIGH is lettered in heavy red capitals across the foot with THE ALL-STEEL BICYCLE beneath it. The sheet code XAD 2228/3292 is set at the lower left, PRINTED IN ENGLAND at the center of the foot, and the printer’s imprint at the lower right.

The joke depends on the audience already knowing the earlier poster: the lion that could not catch the cyclist has given up the chase and taken the bicycle instead. A. G. Reynolds & Co. Ltd. of London S.W.1 also printed the export sheet held in this archive as document 69530.]
