Hugo Koblet, il più forte corridore ciclista svizzero, gran favorito nel 40° Giro di Francia, abbordando troppo velocemente una curva in discesa nella prima tappa dei Pirenei, dopo l’Aubisque, esce di strada, e capitombola riportando serie ferite così da doversi ritirare dalla corsa.
