TOUR DE FRANCE
Classement général après 6 étapes
1er GOLDSCHMIDT
sur cycle CH. GARIN
les cycles GARIN sont livrés avec la selle
IDÉALE
spéciale pour coureur
[A small boxed press advertisement, deeper than it is wide, set in heavy sans-serif capitals on
newsprint. A racing saddle is photographed across the middle of the box in three-quarter view, dark
leather on a chromed two-wire frame, with the Idéale badge stamped into the flank and a paper band
still wrapped around the nose. The word IDÉALE is set beneath it in letters as tall as the headline.
The advertisement is a race result turned into a saddle advertisement in five lines, and the
argument runs backwards through the sentence. The leader of the Tour de France after six stages
rides a Ch. Garin cycle; Garin cycles are delivered with the Idéale saddle; therefore the leader of
the Tour is sitting on one. Idéale did not have to claim the win, only the seat.
The rider is printed GOLDSCHMIDT. He is generally recorded as Jean Goldschmit, of Luxembourg, who
led the 1950 Tour in the early part of the race.
No date is printed on the cutting. The Ebykr archive files it to 21 July 1950, which is consistent
with the classification stated on the sheet.]
