établis au cours du jour de la livraison.

Garantie. — Un an contre tout vice de construction ou défaut de matière. Aucun retour ne doit
être fait à notre usine de Foulain, sans notre accord ; les frais de port sont à la charge du
client ; nos bureaux de Paris n’acceptent aucun envoi.
Juridiction. — Le Tribunal de la Seine sera seul compétent, de convention expresse même s’il y a
plusieurs défendeurs ou s’il s’agit de demande incidente ou d’appel en garantie. Les dispositions,
acceptations de règlement et d’expéditions contre remboursement n’opèrent ni novation ni
dérogation à cette clause attributive de juridiction.

[A single leaf printed both sides in dark blue on pale stock, the price list for the Gnome & Rhône
duralumin bicycle. It is a complete document rather than an extract, and between its two sides it
carries the whole of the offer: who the firm is, what the machine is made of, what the six models
cost and on what terms they are sold.

The house is Cycles Gnome & Rhône, a limited company of 3,500,000 francs capital with its offices
at 80 rue Saint-Lazare in Paris and its works at Foulain in the Haute-Marne, and the aero-engine
maker’s initials are drawn into a circular monogram on the first page, G and R laid over a
concentric-ring ground.

The argument is one word repeated. Sixteen lines of the CONSTRUCTION list on the second side name
sixteen components and fifteen of them end in duralumin: frame tubes, chainrings, cranks, pedals,
mudguards, mudguard stays, brakes, rims, hubs, wing nuts, handlebars, bells, pumps, the chaincase
and the six-strap carrier. The sixteenth is the Simplex three-speed derailleur. The claim under the
description on the first side is put plainly: more durable than steel bicycles.

Six models run from 19,370 francs for the gents Touriste Luxe to 20,270 for the Cyclotourisme with
its three-position handlebar, which is a spread of less than five percent across the whole range.
Soubitez electric lighting fitted is 1,300 francs, and a front changer doubling the number of gears
on models 3, 4 and 5 is 1,800.

The most human thing on the sheet is the red rubber stamp struck across the corner of the price
list: HAUSSE 10 %. Prices rose, the printed tariff was already obsolete, and rather than reprint it
the firm inked a correction over the top and sent it out. The line printed just below the stamp
reads Grandes améliorations sans augmentation de prix.

The sheet prints no year. The franc prices, the Simplex three-speed, the Michelin half-balloon
tires and the postwar Foulain works place it in the second half of the 1940s, and it may run into
the early 1950s; that is the reading on which it is filed here rather than a printed date. It was
printed at Chaumont, the nearest large town to the Foulain works, by the Imprimerie de l’Est.]
