Il n’y avait plus que 5 km à couvrir pour atteindre Ax-les-Thermes. Le drame s’est joué en une fraction de seconde. Brankart a dérapé, s’est appuyé sur Lauredi et Nello, déséquilibré, a franchi le parapet d’un ravin et fait une effrayante chute de 10 mètres. Par miracle, il s’est seulement fracturé une côte. Des suiveurs se sont précipités pour le tirer du précipice.
