LE SALON DU CYCLE ET DU MOTOCYCLE

BRILLANT SECOND OU ÉGAL ?

[Ebykr summary; the article’s text is not reproduced. The unsigned editorial says it is too early to judge what exhibitors, trade visitors and users think of this year’s solution for housing the cycle and motorcycle section of the Salon, which had real drawbacks but was a relief after the fear of having no cycle show at all; the paper is gathering the most authoritative opinions and will return to the question. Meanwhile it regrets that the cycle and motorcycle remain the “poor cousins” of the automobile: not because of the venue, which it was glad to have, but because of many signs that the two industries and their trade are treated as brilliant seconds despite their size. Cycle and motorcycle dealers complained that much of the decor and the facilities at the Parc des Expositions were shabby (a poor bar, sorry awnings, signs falling onto the stands), though the press reception room is praised. Year after year the Salon poster repeats the same fault: nothing in it recalls the bicycle or the motorcycle except one tiny word crushed by the title « SALON de l’AUTOMOBILE »; the paper proposes setting “SALON de l’AUTOMOBILE du CYCLE et du MOTOCYCLE” in proportionate type, and says it does not criticize the drawing itself, a fine work signed Jean Colin, only its incompleteness. Having campaigned for a single Salon in space and time, the paper warns that reunification would be a false step if cycles and motorcycles stayed the distant relations at the foot of the table. The economic effort of the two branches is a considerable share of French capacity, in the staff it employs and the ever-growing number of users it serves, and this issue, with details from the industry’s leaders, sets out that effort, too little known to the public and even to the trade.]
